.50 caliber centerfire rifles in Canada
« on: July 15, 2007, 06:28:12 AM »
I having briefly considered going to Canada to hunt for moose and black bear, as they do get rather large in that country.  I would like to use my New England Firearms Handi-Rifle on that hunt.     Is there a general ban on .50 caliber centerfire rifles in Canada, or do I just go through the protocols of entry as I would with any other firearm?

I'm confused.... most moose and bear are taken with 30-06, 7mm or 303, 338 etc. Are you thinking about using a 50cal muzzle-loader, or an actual 50 cal bmg???

Upnorth,

I will be using NEF Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W Magnum.    I have just become a big fan of the gun and the load, that I believe it can take anything, anywhere.    I just want to make sure there is no legal prohibition on the caliber.    No .50 BMG.  Too damned heavy.

as long as the barrel on the nef is longer than 18", you will be ok. Anything shorter is considered restricted and will not be allowed entry. Non residents are allowed to import 200 rds of ammo for personal use.

As a rule we usually save the 50BMG for mosquitos. Anything smaller, you just make em mad.

You are fine with the S&W 500..... not so much with the 50 BMG ::) it is considered an offensive weapon here.( No kidding)
18 1/2 inch is the accepted min barrel lenghts although much to my surprise I did see the 16 1/2 inch barreled Rugers advertised here.

PS.
I did call the Firearms Centre here today, ( yep they work on weekends as well) and asked about those less then 18 1/2 inch barrels.
Much to my surprise this is not a criteria AS LONG as the firearm OAL is at least 26"

So those Ruger compacts with their 16.5 inch barrels are legal here.  !! :)
