I would like to say hi to all on the board as I am new and have been lurking for some time.  I would also like to say thanks for helping me get rid of the last mag I will ever own.

I decided yesterday to trade off my Browning A-Bolt II 7mm Rem Mag (never even fired it). After much debate and research I decided it  wasnt the correct caliber gun combo for me.  I regret buying 7months ago, but I have rectified the situation as I traded it off for a Marlin 336cs 35 remington! Since I had a rifle the hi velocity gun nuts want the dealer had no problems taking it off my hands.

I aquired the rifle, a brand new nikon scope, leupold mounts, scope covers,  hamer extension and lots of ammo for an even swap.  I was glad to do it and they were happy to get me a rifle that would recoil less and would work better for my style of hunting. I am a still hunter so this made a heck of a lot more sense than a long range shoulder buster.

I wish I would have done this in the firt place, but as peer presure goes in one camp your not killin if it aint a mag caliber. So I got talked into the mag.  Not any more, no offense to anyne out there, but I just dont have a need for the latest greatest mag or anything else.

I havent got to shoot it yet but from what ive been reading I wont be disappointed. End of the month I going home and this rifle wiill come with me for sighting in.

I hunt the woods of NC and the Mountains of NY(home)  I think my new rifle will feel right at home and I cant wait to get my next buck with it.

You might even consider (horrors) holding off mounting that scope & putting a Williams 5D peep on it, instead.
I use my .35 much the same way you intend to use yours, and mine gets about the same size groups @ 100yds with the peep as it did with a Weaver V3 scope.

It'll be even lighter & handier, without the scope - unless your eyes can't do without it.

I am about in the same situation as you.  I bought a 7mm Rem. Magnum Ruger bolt action in February after deer season closed and I already regret it to some degree.  I have a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 that is extremely accurate and wouldn't mind having a 336 in 30-30 or 35 Rem.

Yea I need the scope to some extent but if it becomes to much I will take it off.

I dont regret getting rid of the 7mm at all. I let some guys talk me into it. I shot one the before I purchased it and shot it ok, but It recoiled the snot out of me and was long and heavy and the LOP was to long. Just not a good fit.  Thought I could have put a break on it, but I soon woke up and realised I was a good shot, wanted to keep my ears, and I never shoot past 150-175 yards at big game, most of my shots (95%) are less than 50 yards.

  Realizing anything in the lower 48 states, under 200 yards, could be dropped cleanly with proper shot placement with a non mag cartridge  I started looking for what I needed and could shoulder, shoot well, lower recoil, and strap to my back pack. It was down to 2 rifles a Marlin 336 in 35 rem or a Win 94 in 32 special. I like bigger bullets. So the 35 won and I am tickled to death with it. Cant wait to shoot it in a few more weeks.  Deer, Bear, Moose, what ever, it will do every thing I need it to.

I dont think you will regret getting something smaller and more comfortable to shoot, Honestly I wish I would have just done that in the first place.

in my younger dumber days I was one of the ones at camp that laughed at guys with bolts. Id spew ballitics tables energy figures off the top of my head to impress everyone and to let them know that there antique lever guns were about useless in the pursuit of the illusive and dangerous whitetail deer. Now its come about full circle. All the old timers but dad are gone to the big hunting ground and all the young nephews show up with fancy bolt guns (most were mine at one time) and i show up with a revolver or a lever gun loaded with slow old time lead bullets. Funny thing is that one thing never changed. I bring about half the meat out of the woods thats taken at camp. Most of the old timers were there just like the nephews to drink beer and play poker. A few of them will hunt hard but its the exception and none of them do much more then shoot a half a box of shells the week before season. Ive allways been a avid hunter that put more stock in going into the woods then breaking into a box of beer and i shoot alot. You hear alot of people spout off about what it takes to kill a deer. In all honesty ive taken them with everthing from a .22 to a 458mag and what it takes is putting a hole in the vitals PERIOD. A 3220 in the hands of a marksman is much better then a 300 mag in the hands of a poker player. I never get ribbed at camp about what i use for a weapon. As a matter of fact its usually one of the main topics first day at camp and if i showed up with a chipmunk loaded with cb caps not a one of them would dare say i was undergunned. They know im a good enough shot and a smart enough shot to use whatever i bring properly. Im sure your buddys will have the smirks wiped off there faces when you come in dragging a deer. If they laugh to hard just challange them to a little shooting match with there big mags. Id about bet once they see what that little 35 can do in the field a few more of them will show up each year with a real deer hunting gun!!

Just wait till you compare how much meat their magnums waste, compared to your 35 , won't suprise me a bit if yours drops sooner too.
