Light load for a 7mm-08

Recently I developed a light plinking load for the 7mm-08. Have not yet run
it over the Chrono. I guess about 1600to 1800ft There is pracically no recoil. The load is super accurate and intended for a young youth.

I sighted the rifle in at 25 yards, three shot groups went into one hole.

Rem new brass. CCI primers, 15.0 gr 700x Hi Score  IMR, 120gr Hornady V-max
moly plated. I consider this load to be a save max with this powder. A pound of this powder will yield 466 loads.

When shooting this load I elevated the barrel for each shot to concentrate the powder on the primer.

Once the weather turns a bit cooler I will chrono the load, to get exact
velocity. From what I can tell this load will take a deer out to 75 yards. With a well placed shot.

It was not designed as a deer load but just a load to get young people
used to shooting a big game rifle. Since this load is so accurate I wont change anything.

When the kid gets the gun he will be beyond himself. The gleam in his
eyes will be more than enough payment for me.

I wished I had a grandson to lavish some guns on. Even my own son would be fine but he is not interested in hunting or shooting either. The three grand daughters are kept off guns too.

The oldest grand daughter is not even allowed to look at my guns. My son in law is totally against guns. It is sad to say the least.

Sounds like ya did good Fred.Bet the youngster will enjoy shooting with that. ;)Too bad the son in law is antigun.I hope he at least appreciates all the knowledge you have to offer.If not at least we do!!

I just got my 9y\o the 7mm-08 youth model as well.  I have been looking for some factory loads that are low recoil.  The only ones I found were at Able Ammo, Remington managed recoil in 7mm-08.  Unfortunately, they are sold out and the Remington factory could not tell me if they are going to make any more.  They said that was a special run.

Any other ideas on where to get some?  He can definitely shoot the Remington express that we bought, i just want him to have a round he can practice more with.

Sorry but I can't help you with factory loads. I suggest you buy a hand loading tool and do your own. A few boxes of factory loads will almost pay for an
economical loading set. Reduced loads are mostly made by hand loaders.

Thanks for the input, Fred.  I found a friend that reloads and he offered to do them for me.  He even bought the dies himself just to help my son out.  He's really interested in helping my son enjoy the shooting sports.

That is the spirit. Just tell your friend to be careful not to throw a double charge of powder, which could be bad news.

Elevate the rifle before shooting to settle the charge against the primer
for best possible and consistent ignition.

My friend your son will love to shoot these loads.

Talk about gleam in the eye. I surprised my son with a new deer rifle last Saturday. He used my 30-30 last year for deer. He probably won't admit it but he was very excited. We stopped for a coffee on the way home from the store. It's the first time he ever beat me finishing the coffee, he couldn't wait to get home and clean the gun. He is always teasing me about drinking it too fast and too hot. I got him a Remmy 700 DM in 260. Nice package.

He is 30 years old and struggling to raise his son. I figured better late than never. I never seemed to have the time for him when he was young. Trying to make up for so many missed opportunities.
