Higher power variable for pistol barrel, which one?

I have a 12" 22BR barrel that I need to scope and I want something at least 8x, up to 12x if I can get it for target shooting and varmint shooting.  Are there any preferences out there, good or bad?  I've looked at the Nikon Monarch that goes up to 8x and Burris 3x-12x w/ target turrets.  I have a Nikon Monarch UCC 6.5-20x target scope on my 6PPC Encore rifle barrel and I LOVE that scope, but do I need more than 8x with a pistol?  Let me know what you think.

Depends on how far you plan on shooting. It"s my opinion that you cannot have too much magnification. On something I planned on shooting 200+ yards with the Burris 3-12 would be the clear winner.

I prefer the Burris 3-12X P.A. My 3 also have the Ballistic Plex reticle, but I don't consider that absolutely essential, because the cross marks are rather small. I would definitely NOT get the goofy Posi-Lock feature. Magnification over 9 or 10X is easier to use on a center grip XP than a Contender or Encore because the scope is closer to your eye, which is helpful with the shorter eye relief at the higher magnifications.

I have 3 Burris 3x-12x 'scopes and they have worked very well.  Many a woodchuck got rattled at 200+ yards with my T/C 16" Contender in 223 Remington cartridge...BCB

I bought a 3 x 9 burris which I love, as well as a 3 x 12.  Thr 3 x 9 is no longer made, and can be had pretty cheap if you shop.  One thing to remember about high power pistol scope mounts is that their vertical zero is a kind of comprimise on contender and encore barrels, averaging the anticipated recoil.

For instance, a 223 recoils a lot less than a 308.  Therefore with the vertical adjustment set dead center (i.e. the same number of clicks to stop both up and down) the 223 will print low and the 308 will print high.

Use signature rings with offsets to fix this, and you'll be very happy.

Depending on just how you hold the gun from a bench you likely can get by with a longer eye relief rifle scope like a Leupold. No handgun scope holds a candle to a rifle scope for accurate shooting really. From most hunting rest positions tho you'll need to be REAL CAREFUL not to get an eyefull of scope.

Graybeard has great point. I went to a long eye rifle scope (mine was a fairly cheap 3-9 Bushnell with a claimed 6" eye relief) for my .223 and it was great improvement. The actual relief at 9x was more like 3-4" but by holding close (Rifle scopes give you a better field of view), to acquire the target then moving back a bit, I have managed to not give myself a half moon on my forehead.

Another thing to think of is running out of scope adjustment. I got a professionally machined forward tilt Weaver 92a blued base for a contender that I used to shoot at over 300 yds. It hits 28 inches high at 100yds and you start sighting in at 200 yds. My old eyes don't work long range anymore. Am willing to trade for an unmodified 92A base. We'll pay our own shipping.
