Ready to fire !!! (well almost)
« on: July 20, 2007, 03:38:02 PM »
Good evening gents,  Well after prodding you all for suggestions as to how I should finish my metal carriage I finally decided to go with D.D.'s  idea. This is a loose interpretation of a H.M.S. Victory deck gun. Sorry my camera batteries croaked out and this isn't a very good picture. I'll try to get some better photos tomorrow. Will try to get some smoke and fire when the paint fully cures.  Tracy

Something I battle with at work all the time is the difference between paint being dry and being "cured".

If it is soft, it is dry but not cured. It often takes a week or so after the paint is dry to be cured. If you want the long version of my story about paint drying, I would be glad to bore you with it.

Anyway, if the paint is still soft, be carefull about firing it. If it was black, or dark at least,  I would not have mentioned this. Being yellow, take your time about loading and testing it.

Rick

I bet your right, especially since the humidity is so high around here. I'll take your advice and wait a few days at least before firing. Thanks for reining me in Rickk.  Tracy  P.S. If you tell me a story about watching paint dry, I'll tell you one about watching grass grow. :-D

I raise llamas, so I watch grass grow all the time :-)

The way that paint "dries" is as follows...

Most solvent based paint is a bunch of little globules of pigment, separated by solvent. When the solvent evaporates, the globules are allowed to come in contact with each other. When they contact each other, molecular things start to happen and they stick together.

So, first the paint "dries". That is evaporation of the solvent. At that point in time the paint is soft and not resistant to humidity. The globs are touching, but not fused together.

As time goes by, the globs of paint bond with each other. That is "curing". Typically, it takes a week or so for paint to "cure". Some types take more time, some types take less.

So, never push paint. You can add coats after 24 hours, as the solvent has evaporated. The extra coats will be able to bond with the uncured bottom coats. Don't expose the paint to humidity or contaminants for a week at least if you want best performance .

Catalytic (2 part) paints are an exception to this rule... they cure in a totally different manner.

Rickk is right, but it's one of the hardest things to do. when i paint a carriage i basically try to forget i have another toy, but usually after a week my memory comes back. then i put it together and wait another day or so, just to be sure it's been long enough to cure. even when it's cured i try my best to keep oil and cleaners off of it, don't like messing up a new paint job.......

Well Rickk that was the best story I have ever heard about paint drying. Quite informative. I am using this cannon as a center piece on my kitchen table for the next week or so. The picture really doesn't do it justice. I need to get batteries and try to get some better pics. I used Diamond Vogel industrial coatings CoteALL color #7863a they mixed me up a quart for a 10 spot. I think The flash on the camera washed out some of the color. I might try taking a picture out in the sun once it cures. I appreciate your comments and support, so to spare you a story about grass growing I'm going outside to mow it. Have a great weekend!   Tracy P.S. I love your marquee Tropico very creative.
