Moultrie theft deterrent cage
« on: July 21, 2007, 10:18:53 AM »
I had a friend of mine fabricate a theft deterrent cage for my Moultrie 4.1 IR. I gave him the camera and in a week he welded\machined\fabricated this frame. It fits like a glove. The heaviest part is the 5\16th hardened chain. It's held together by 4 stainless screws in the back. As long as the cage is fastened tightly to the tree, so the "thief" can't get to the screws, the unit is "safe". I need to tighten the chain to the tree with a turnbuckle before I lock the chain to the cage. Nothing is "full-proof" but it may deter somone enough to just have them move on to find another easier target.

Very creative, but unfortunately it won't prevent vandalizm. :-\ I've chained my mountain bike to a BIG tree only to have the tires slashed, they couldn't steal it, so they trashed it. >:(

Tim,

Yeah, there is always that possibility. The mindset that "if I can't steal it...then I'll bash it and you'll have a POS."  Not much I can do about that. I have to clean up the chain with some paint thinner and then paint it with some matte finish rustoleum or De-rusto paint. Tree trunk gray\brown I think. The camera is an IR so no obvious night flashes to attract attention and it's in an area that isn't "in plain sight" of a road.

But you know, I have to cable my tree stand to the trees and if someone really want's it....they just have to bring a set of heavy duty cable cutters. They just need to hope that me or one of my buddies aren't sneakin up on 'em when they are hackin away at it. Cell phones and 911. No one needs to be a hero.
