How NOT to fire a cannon. Part-1
« on: July 22, 2007, 06:06:28 AM »
I came across this on Youtube and it shows clearly how cannon accidents occur.  See if you can count the number of loading and firing procedures violated in the few minutes of this clip.  [warning, some foul language involved]   Dom

During the reloading session, I kept thinking ..."the process of natural selection"

Very, very painful to watch and they should have titled it, "How to Remove Yourself From the Gene Pool".  If, however, you do manage to survive several of these "loading/firing" sessions, then it's time to go to Vegas, because with luck like that, you are bound to clean up!!
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

From the poem  Screw-Guns  by Rudyard Kipling

Kids need their mouths washed out with soap if they don't kill themselves first!! ::)

Everyone knows you need to dress like the 1800's to do that stuff!

Their choice of words is far from appealing also

I had no problem with their language - but then I only turn on the speakers for special events perhaps once a year and this was not the occasion for 2007.

Agree, kids NEED mentors.

Hay I was just thinking we can be mentors, how about someone posting a video with the safe and proper way to load and fire a cannon . I do not have the proper video equipment but someone does. What steps and procedures do you guys follow to insure safety? we could all contribute.

I think it's already been done. I know I came across something like that sometime ago. I'll see if I can find it again tonight.

I say dress the part, don't let it get boring, and stress safety.
Invite those same kids to take part.
Just don't give them beer until the gunpowder is put away

Here are the links to the videos I was talking about. I think they did an informative job! It's in two parts.

Part One.

Good Idea!  I was thinking of leaving a Youtube reply directing those "wayward cannoneers" to this forum for safe loading and firing procedures along with safe cannon construction.   If you type "homemade cannon" into the Youtube search, you will find there are more than one careless act.  This one I posted seemed to be  the worst except for maybe the pvc gunpowder cannons.   Dom

I think your idea's about mentoring those guys is noble. Unfortunately they have to want to be mentored first and they can't have the beer until they turn 21.

Yes I'm sure these kids do not think they are kids. Maybe if they were sober you could talk some sense into them. All I can say is that big boned kid sitting on the bucket is lucky not to have gotten a stick shot through his gut.  Tracy

Nah, he was pretty safe....the guy's face looking down the ramrod as he rammed the charge down a still-smoking barrel would have stopped any projectile from hitting the large guy! ;)

Man, that was just incredible. People doing things like that will probably eventually get cannon-play banned or heavily restricted.

I think watching him trying to puncture the charge with 10 lbs of rings on every digit bothered me more than the language! :D
