cast bullets in .44 g2 or contender
« on: July 22, 2007, 07:27:47 AM »
Im just getting back into handgun hunting after about a 15 year absence. Ive purchased a G2 12 inch in .44 mag.  Any body out there using cast bullet loads in one of these or an older contender for deer hunting?  The recoil in Federal factory loads was more than I expected allthough tolerable.  They just seemed to be a bit more than I remembered when I hunted with a Redhawk.  Im sure I can get used to 240 grain XTP loads but I was intested in going to maybe 250 or 280 WFN lbt style hard cast and lower the velocity and the recoil a little and still have a very effective 100-125 yard cartridge that will penetrate.

I have and older contender with a 14" barrel  44mag very accurate with cast bullets, 240gr and 300gr Keith style bullets, I use Accurate #9 powder. I have taken deer out at 100yds with them off a good rest.  JIM

280g WFN GC's, over AA#5, and CCI 300 primers. One ragged hole groups at 50 yards, with my 12'' G2 and 12" encore, 1275fps, 2" high at 50, 3'' low at 100, Oh yeah. Shoots clean through 175-200lb wild pigs, kills clean.
Unique will get the velocity/recoil down even more but shouldn't be necessary for you. 1200fps is very smooth.

I have a mold that throws 265 grain semis with gas checks.  Haven't used them for hunting, but they are shooters!
