No primers available!
« on: July 22, 2007, 10:38:17 AM »
I went to one of the major US sporting goods stores yesterday to pick up some large pistol primers. Found the shelves completely empty. There was not even a shotgun primer on the shelf! Went over to the firearms counter and asked one of the people behind the counter where all of there primers were. The guy said they were completely sold out and they didn’t have any Idea when they would be able to get any more. He said the US military had hundreds of millions of rounds of ammunition on back order, and all of the companies that manufacture primers cannot keep up with the demand. He said the primer manufacturing companies have geared up to make primers for the production of military ammunition only and until the needs of the military are met there won’t be any primers available to the general public. I drove across town to another major sporting goods store and was basically told the same thing, that all of the primers that the manufactures could make were being used for the manufacture of military ammunition. That store only had eight thousand large pistol primers left on the shelf. The guy behind the counter said that was all the primers the store had left and that they could not get anymore.

well hmm and I was just starting to work down my supply of primers I hoarded from the 90's primer scare.  Have been going through my large pistol supply the most.

Maybe I should start working on my small pistol or shot gun - I think I have a batch of them still.
Hope this sorts out soon.  I was just thinking I'd like to resupply on large pistol.

thanks for the info.

Creating a shortage rumor is how the last panic started. It also forever raised the prices of primers after it calmed down. They (the mfg, & Jobbers) can run the prices up with a scare. Look at the price of gas now even when it's on a down cycle it's still a dollar higher than before the war. The primer mfg are no different than any other major corp in lusting after our $$$. A short term supply scare is an excuse to jack up prices without fear of complaints for their customers.

Unfortunately when purchasing primers on-line or mail order a "Hazmat" fee of $20.00 is added for shipping purposes. So with Hazmat, shipping and handling the primers cost is doubled!

It seems as if the politics of this country go as predicted, we will need the U.S. Military to have all the primers it can get!

Like I tell everyone who gripes about the price of gas.......Think it's too high? Don't  buy it, the price will drop like a rock.

Of course that is also to folks that drive 30 miles in an SUV to buy a 4.00 cup of coffee at starbucks.

I haven't noticed a shortage in my area, but I did just buy a batch at Cabellas and the price was up from $1.99 to $2.99.

FAT TO FAMINE.........THAT IS THE WAY THE WORLD TURNS . LIKE IT OR NOT ! WHEN ITS FAT YOU MUST HOARD UP TO COVER THE LEAN YEARS ( SEE JACOB AND THE EGYPTIANS IN THE BIBLE---IT IS STILL REPEATING)
AND ONCE YOU HAVE A SURPLUS YOU MUST ROTATE INVENTORY BUT MAINTAIN YOUR SUPPLY . IF YOUR Y2K FOOD IS GONE...YOU BETTER START RESUPPLY A.S.A.P.

I called 4 different shops yesterday to get a pound of H110 .bass pro had 1 pound left and 1 brick of large rifle primers($29.99) . They had several other sizes but only in 100 primer trays. the clerk did NOT knoe when they were getting more. I can remember when primers were a dollar a tray and 9.50 a brick! Dang ,I MUST be getting old!

I've heard rumors that Federal is going to quit selling primers all together. They need them for their ammunition. That was from the local store where I buy some of my supplies.

Saw that one coming. For the last year or so primer stock took months to replenish. And when they restocked, they were more expensive than the last time. Guess the fact that the manufacturers have to ramp up production explains the price increase.

I was just at the sportsmans warehouse in town a few days ago, and they were stoked to the teeth, they were pretty slim the week before that... but a whole new shipment.  They are still out there.

Isn't Federal now owned by the same entity which also owns CCI, RCBS, Outers, Aliant Powder, Weaver etc.?  I believe the name is ATK- Ammunition Systems.
Maybe CCI will be making primers for the Federal ammo?
