Trolling, Trolling, Trolling Reeled in a Buffalo Classic
« on: July 22, 2007, 12:00:59 PM »
Got a BC from a guy that sells  AR-15 clones. He got it in trade and it appeared to be unfired.
He had no interest in it so i got a good deal.
It is a 2002 rifle with no view port or plug. The locking flap is not contacting all the way across....about 10% on the right side and 5% on the left side.  Little contact in the center. Depth of the engagement is only about .050 or so. I suspect with a couple of hundred round through it will wear into better engagement.

This rifle has very shallow rifling like the .38-55 Target.
I have not slugged the bore yet but I bet the bore dia is large and a long nosed bullet will not get good support on top of the lands.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good cast bullet with the shallow rifling?

Are you casting or buying precast bullets? Beartooth offers bullets of different size as does Montana Bullet Works.

Any that are sized properly for the bore, I shoot .459" in both the 45-70 and 45-120 BC, but yours may shoot .458" or .460" best, depends on the bore.

You'll probably find the throat very short, but there are exceptions, most are short throated, I had to throat 3 of mine, but not the 45-120 of course!!

Bernie, uncheck the "spell check as I type" under the post window, it's what causes your post to disappear when you try to use the smileys. ;)

Dodd3,
Are you talking about the gas check flat pointed LEE 500 grain mold or the Postell styled 500 grain Lee bullet that is not design for a gas check?

If you are talking about the long nosed bullet how do you get the gas checks on it.?

Hello Tim,
I want to cast my own.  The story I hear is that the nose needs to fit the bore dia well or it slumps to one side when fired giving poor accuracy. An old timer cast me some nice bullets many years ago. They were the 500 grain Lyman govt style bullet.  The nose is very sloppy in every 45/70 I have tried them in. They do not shoot very well either.

If the bullet isn't seated straight in the case, or doesn't fit the bore well to begin with, you're gonna have accuracy issues. If a load has a noticeable bulge in the case on one side that's not even all the way around, the bullets aren't seated straight and that will definitely get things off to a bad start, and is a common complaint with cast bullets in the 45-70. A deep rifled Ballard bore would probably be more forgiving tho, but I've not shot one, so have no personal experience with them cept in muzzleloaders. I've shot numerous cast bullets in my 45-70 and 45-120, haven't had accuracy issues yet, but I choose bullets that are proper for the bore. My next bullet will be 700gr Ranger Ricks in both the .500 S&W Handi and 45-120, the .458" may not shoot well, but I'll give em a try anyway, they're bore riders I'm pretty sure. ;D

quickdtoo,
Thanks for digging up the dodd3 posts on the Lee bullet. He is getting great results with it. At 1500 fps I bet it smarts in a BC though. I only want to go 1100 or so. If it ever quits raining this summer I will cast some of my own.  At least I can go slug my rifle and figure out if I have the correct sizer die for it.

You may want to look at a  RanchDog Bullet Mould, especially if your bore slugs over .458  These are specifically designed for the oversized bore found in the Marlin 45-70's.......Right now he offers 2 weight bullets in .460.
Though my T/C Contender 45-70 slugs at .4585, I ordered a 350gr mold and  .460 sizing die.......I really wanted a tumble lube bullet with a wide flat nose, and found this site....plus these are gas check moulds.
Squirrel.......the OTHER dark meat.....!

Off hand,
Thanks for the info. That is the first time I have seen anything about Ranchdog Moulds.
