what about a dog? dogs can hear and find things we can't and also you can sent the dog to check something. When i do get a home, i am going to get a great pyrenean mountain dog. it can play with your kids but attack anyone that trys to hurt your love ones.

yeah, i think they get up to 190 pound. still dogs are a good weapon to have for HOME defense. you can stay in cover with your gun and the dog can check it out for you.

Hey William.  We got one a couple of months ago.  Kathie wanted a lap dog but couldn't resist this puppy.  My cat and 12 year old German Shepard still hasn't forgiven me for bringing her home.  I don't have any pictures as my home system crashed, but they are white with a curled tail... and BIG!   ;D

The Gr Pyrenees are wonderful dogs, excellent at guarding and their size alone offers much deterrent.   However I would urge Jamaldawg to consider a short hair breed for Florida (if you still live here).   The GP was bred in the mountains for herding and guarding livestock.   They are heat intolerant and fairly high energy needing regular excercise so as not to go stir crazy.

As far as home defense, any alert breed that makes noise when a stranger comes around - to alert the owners before the BG enter - is a valuable asset.   One of our local LEO's was speaking at our Neighborhood Watch meeting and highly suggested a watchful dog to act as a first alert.   He said throughout his career houses with dogs are broken into far less than those without.
I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow. You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less. (Gus McCrae)

Like I said, we love our new puppy!   ;D  She has a very deep and loud voice that she isn't afraid to use.  She hears and sees everything that goes on.  She is happy, intellegent and loves cats and the grand kids.  I feel better with her there when I am away from home.  Though she is only a year old this month I think anyone who got rough with Kathie would be in for a bad day.   :D

Which is good because the old Shepard won't even get off the bed to bark anymore, let alone come down stairs...  ::)

the great pyrenean mountain dog can life in very hot places too(some are being used in Africa to protect sheep) and i read in the book of great pyrenean that they can live happliy in any climate, they will adjust to any teperature. As a breed from a temprate zone, they can accommodate easliy to intensities of heat and cold. the metabolism and body temp of this breed are lower then other breeds of dogs. that what helps them to stay cool even if all that fur.

In these days of career criminals, home invasions and murder, you would think they would make the mistake of choosing the wrong home to attack, a well armed home and home owner. I just never here such stories.

Every month it has a bunch of excerpts from newspapers around the country detailing bad guys that were wounded, killed, or detained by legally armed homeowners. There is no shortage of these stories but the main stream media won't cover them lest we all turn into bloodthirsty vigilantees.

A tuxedo colored bunny rabbit. Anything that startles her at night she thumps her back feet(a rabbit's natural reaction to danger, cottontails do it too) which is very loud. Imagine slamming a tennis racquet as hard as you can, landing it flush against the ground. I guess she's a night watchman rabbit. And Lord help any burglar if he gets between her and a carrot or stalk of celery, or worse yet, tries to pick her up(rabbits don't like that). He can sit in a jail cell, or ER, and remember the days when he still had nerves in his hands and distinguishable fingerprints, because a rabbit's hind legs and nails are nothing but pure weapons. She a good girl. Great alarm system. Just don't leave your socks laying around. She steals them and I don't know what she does with them.

I've had three house rabbits in the past.  They do make excellent watch 'dogs'.  The are semi nocturnal, and have keen hearing.  The first one we had had some Flemish Giant in her.  She weighed 14 lbs when she was full grown.  When she would sound the alarm it sounded like somebody was hitting the floor with a framing hammer.  In the summers she loved to lounge in the open window sill in our living room.   She filled the entire window sill.  She wouldn't even flinch when our neighbor rode up on his Harley.  But when she sensed someone or something was in the yard that did not belong she would hop around the house thumping her foot, watch and listening, then thump some more. I recall my Father-in-law tapping his fingers on the floor teasing her trying to back her up into a corner once.  Let's just say he only did that once.

Her is a cool video of a wild momma rabbit running off a snake... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXp95EMf4fw&feature=related

Here are a couple of other attacking rabbit videos... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zcxVpHRgE8&feature=related  and  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8uOq8V5PF0&feature=related

Yep, they always peed in the litter pan but would occasionally drop a 'raisin' here and there.  I think it's the all fiber diet thing.  Their scat or 'rabbit raisins' as I call them are firm and dry and have no real odder so they are easily collected with a tissue or swept up in a dust pan.  As an aside, rabbit raisins are very high in nitrogen and are good for the garden.

Rabbits are very easy to housebreak! They are the most alert mammal I have ever seen. And yes, when they are startled or sense danger, that hind foot goes to thumping. They know their owners, just like dogs and cats, but are extra sensitive due to their nature as being their place on the food chain. Even someone being loud down the street, my bunny has thumped her foot woke me up to alert me.

Couldn't agree more, but the media has an agenda and any good that results from legal carry points out the foolishness of that agenda. By using carefully selected bits and pieces of truth, the media can build a mosaic that portrays an untruth, yet, they never actually lied.

When I was in the Army back in the 80's I was stationed in Germany for a few years. There was a German missle installation a few miles away. They had a double row fence that had a 12' to 15' gap in between them. There were no guard dogs there. They had a flock of GEESE that ran around between the fences! The Germans said the geese were better guards than any dog and a lot less maintenance to boot. If any body got anywhere near that fence the Germans knew about it pronto. I'm not suggesting getting a guard goose, I just always thought it was interesting.

i always have loved the Armed Citizen. the media has really been up on that people are buying guns and there is no ammo in some places. I count 20 storys from the 4/10-4/13 about the all the guns that people are buying. also don't forget about 20/20 "if i only had a gun".  Can you really just walk into a guns show and buy any guns you wanted with no paper work or anything?? cuase they made it look like i could just walk into a gun show and buy a ak-47,mags,ammo and anything else at the same time and not need anything showing who or how old i am.

just remember guys. We shoot to STOP! Legally it has to be irrelevant it the perp dies. We shoot to make them STOP their felonious action. When the perp stops his felonious action we MUST stop shooting unless  a dangerous situation still exists, like he stopped attacking but still holds a gun. Once the situation is contained we, as the good-guys, call 911 and ask for  police and ambulance.

I hope I never need to shoot someone.  Even if totally justified it will alter your life in adverse ways you cannot imagine.

As someone earlier said, a stout door can go a long way to preventing an unwanted situation. Yes, someone breaking through a flimsy door to do harm is committing a felony. But why put yourself or loved ones in a potentially dangerous situation when a trip to Home Depot (insert Tim Taylor grunting sounds) might prevent the situation from ever occurring?

Home defense is more than weapons.
Anybody got any good ideas on how to reinforce a pair of 36" French doors? Wouldn't take much to kick them open.

As a matter of fact, yes.   Home Depot sells heavy, steel security doors that cover French Doors.  You have to go to the door section and special order them. You need to know your door frame measurements.  They use pivoting cane bolts on one side to anchor the less used door to the top and bottom and the other door latches to that door with a normal knob and deadbolt. I got a set in a sunburst pattern for less than $500.
