Friend's little brother ended an armed home invasion in south texas with a single shot 12; I want to say he was almost 13 at the time. His parents were on the other side of the invader, so the shot was absorbed by the bad guy at less than 10 feet. Wouldn't expect a 13yo to have the wits to not shoot through a bad guy for fear of hitting mom & dad behind him, nor to sight in for accurate shot placement in that situation.

I feel bad for anyone in the same house with a full mag of milsurp ball 5.56 let loose. We get ricochet injuries in the shoothouse off of metal door hinges, and everything is ballistically damped. That's with clearly marked targets, known course of fire, and full knowledge that you're going to be shooting.

I have a Panzerfaust ready by the front door.  If, he gets past that my wife has a twin M2 Browning .50 Caliber Machine Gun, or "Ma Deuce" as we refer to it. Hopefully we have sufficent power to stop any home invasion.

#1. Rem 870 12gauge Tactical Magnum with a Lasermax 1202 laser/light combo, loaded with 7 alternating shells of 4 Buck and 00.

#2. Sig P226R .40 s&w with a Sig STL-900 laser/light combo under the barrel, loaded with either 180grain Hornady TAP, Federal Hydrashoks or Remmy Golden Sabers.

#3. Sig P229R, same as above minus the laser/light combo.

#4. Sig 556, 30 round mag loaded with 55grain Hornady TAP

If need be, a Rem 870 Wingmaster and single shot New England firearms 12gauge lol.

The 700Police would be pointless unless used as a 13lb club :o

sweet gun. Maybe for rural defense the 700 would work for a stand off gun fight. like they 70 yards down range useing a car or some other hard cover. Not all attacks happen at close range or in the city were help could come fast. In G&A they had something about rural defense and they say a G3 or some kind of other auto 308 could be very good.

Louisville slugger!

Works ok in a pinch against another contact weapon, although range is limited, and useless against firearms. Still works better than harsh words.

I have added a Springfield Long slide V16 in 45 ACP to my home defense arsenal, stuffed with XTP's, another pistol that is so second nature.

What weapon do you keep handy for defending your home and family?

A SOG tomahawk, and long bowie.

If they come in, they are going to regret it.

drdougrx ,

My daughter has a Maltipoo.  My other daughter has a German Shephard.  The most likely to defend the home?  The Maltipoo.  The Shephard is more likely to knock you down and lick you to death............. :D

Isn't that the truth....the little dogs seem to be more territorial.  Ours is momma's dog...treats everybody else like an equal and heaven forbid daddy tries to give momma a good night peck....he becomes frankendustbunny.....on the other hand....he's the only other male in a house awash with estrogen and does greet me at the door like he hasn't seen me in a year...so...he's cool.

i think how quick you can lay your hands on your gun,is most important..then occasional drills so
you only have to think about whether to use deadly force or not..
ive kinda decided that num 2 steel shot is pretty affective in house ,,so i use it now instead of
the buckshot..my shot gun will blow a cardboard packing size box to smitherenes with it..i was pretty impresses..
ive always got choices as to what i want to use..a marlin 60 with velocitors is my second choice for home protection..ive even got a 22 revolver hid in the bathroom ..its in the far end of the house an i don t want to get caught there on my 2am trip to the john. :)slim
ps. one factor for me is ,i know i look more vulnerable since im older..but he ll get to my wife,, over my dead body..
before she got sick ,he was better off dealing with me than her..she had bad intentions for any intruder,,
also she wasn t gonna give him any chance to explain himself.. :). she was a shoot first ,ask questions later sort of lady..

Slim brings up a good point. How many out there can get their hands on their business gun and get it up and operational in less than 5 seconds? If anyone keeps their home defense tools locked away, or in a closet across the room or down the hall, it might be good to run some drills from time to time to test that. While we're at it, how many occasionally check and service that old shot gun or revolver tucked away under the bed or in the sock drawer?  Just a thought.

I have seen it noted that the average time from breaking in to getteing to master bed room is 45 seconds . So from hearing the breaking in to facing the bad guy is less than a min.

Lots of folks have kids and opt to secure their condition 1 defense gun from them, which adds time to your response. I couldn't rationalize my wife trying to dial a combo while the bad guy is coming and the kids are screaming, so we opted to teach our kids gun safety instead. And use sa/da revolvers, da pull is tough on little fingers. The old safety hammerless ads showed a kid in a crib playing with a .38 ... different times.

response time is important, I sleep with a Kel-Tec P9 under my pillow, that gives me something to use as I open the closet door to grab my short barrel Mossberg 20 ga with alternate buck shot and slug. Did you ever think what a mess it would be to clean up after having to shoot some idiot ? blood and guts all over the room......

The kid issue is hitting home with me.  My little girl is only 1, but she's curious about everything.  I know she can't figure out how the shotgun works and I don't think she has the strength to rack the slide, but it's not going to be under the bed anymore.  It'll be on the top shelf in the closet.  I'm going to be purchasing one of those gunvault safes pretty soon.

This may not work for all kids but it will let you know yours . I had a blank gun for dog training . I let my kids look at and shoot my real guns . They started around 5 . The rule was they could look and hold but only with my wife or me along. I  would leave the blank gun laying out and watch to see what each one did . The blanks in the gun looked real . The oldest glanced at it and went on , the middle one got her mom to show her what was out and loaded . The youngest chewed me out . I knew and they knew what was allowed after that.

I used to keep a bedside revolver until my kids were born and started becoming mobile.   I then got a gunvault safe with the finger position activated lock that I mounted to the bed frame.   I can get it open in pitch dark without worry and it is safe from the little ones.

18 inch pump shotgun and bird shot so I don't shoot the rest of the family or the neighbors through the walls or BG.  Even this shotgun only spreads the shot 2 to 3 inches from accross the room.  Buck shot is for long distance.  Also what ever handgun I have on me with standard loads for the same reason as above.
