I really don't want to shoot anyone. I wnat them to know that they picked the wrong hose. I have three very alert mini schnauzers as small as they are they wake me up (#1 scare them off) (#2 wake me up) so I can turn on the lights and grab the mossberg as my wife is calling the police.

Smokem, I doubt any of us WANT to shoot anyone. I certainly do not. However, the time may come when you are forced into a situation where you must shoot someone or let an innocent be harmed or killed. Should that occur, we are discussing what we each have chosen for just such an occasion.

I have a mossberg 535 that has a full choke, with basic shell.  Also a 9mm Hi-point handgun with centerfire ammo.  Hope this works

The telephone answer makes me think of these home security system ads on the tube. Someones breaking in and the first thing they grab is the phone. Sends shivers down my spine. The phone won't even make a very good club. First the gun, then the phone.

FIRST THE GUN THEN THE PHONE. Any gun even a toy gun is better than a phone. Crook sees you with a phone in your hand he knows he's got at least 15 or 20 minutes to do his worst.

A wedge on a handle for taking apart automotive ball joints. About the nicest modern day club you could come up with.

Bilmac!! I can attest to the ability of a ball joint spreader to get your attention having been slapped in the face with one doing the front end on my '65 Biscayne. I won't soon forget the moment!!

Remington 870 18" 7 shot capacity with 00 in the tube and four rifled slugs on the side saddle under the bed.  Some kind of a handgun in the nightstand by the bed full of hollow points.  The handgun changes over time as they get bought & sold, but currently it's a beretta M9 with 147gr hollow points.

call me paranoid, but.....

A .45 automatic at the head of the bed, a 9mm in a holster on a coat hanger in the clothes closet, another 9mm under a towel in the towel closet, and for the coupe de grace: a .32 acp in the refridgerator under a loaf of bread!

Just recently added to my layers of protection.   I have beside the bed an Assegai......double edge spear 13"long x 3" wide and razor sharp on a 3' shaft.   This is what Shaka designed for and trained his Zulu warriors on.  A mid thorax wound from this battle implement is generally not survivable.  No worry about over penetration either.

Oh yeah, well I have a 80# golden retriever that thinks he's a lap dog.  One look from him and anyone will forget about crime and start petting him.  Actually he a really good guard dog and he'll bark like heck if a stranger gets too close to the house.

You made me laugh Shootall! :D  But seriously I did take that into consideration when I positioned the Assegai to the side post of the head board - it is 6" out of my way - I need that because the meds my doc has me on sends me to the john several times each night so I definitely didn't want to skewer myself.
