can't always see peep clearly due to need for bifocals
« on: July 22, 2007, 05:29:32 PM »
Ok, here's the deal, I'm 38 yrs old and my optometrist tried to put me in bifocals.  Not bad enough yet to totally require them but I'm getting there.  I'm wondering what to do if it gets to the point that I can't use my peep site.  Is a kisser button the solution?  Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.  Maybe I'll get the chance to shoot tomorrow and see how things go.  Give me thoughts as to what my solutions will be 'cause I'm sure it won't be too long before I have to change something.  Thanks, Greg

You don't look AT a peep sight you look THRU it. There is no reason why you should ever focus on the peep, just look thru it. The aperture of it will sharpen your vision of all on the other side of it from you the same way a smaller aperture of a camera lens gives more depth of field. Just like in shooting a gun your focus should be on the front sight and the target can be a little fuzzy but that front sight must be clear. The peep sight should assure that.

I have trifocals.  I actually shoot better with bi.  My eye doctor tole me to keep the bi's, that hunting I would have better vision with them.  He is correct.  I shoot much better with the bi.

Bill is correct.  You should not really see the peep.  Your eye should center itself in it and then focus on the front pin.  The target will be slightly burred but still visiable.

I have the "no peep" and really like it.
I got it because "peeps" robs you of some light, especially at dawn and dusk.
But it should work for you too.

It took some time setting up, but it works great now.  Basically you draw back and peak at the Nopeep to make sure you are lined up correctly (should see the bullseye), then just use your pins.

Some peeps have too small of a hole.  I drill them out in small steps, 1/64" at a time so that the inside diameter of the peep is the same diameter as the circular hood around the pins. Then, your eye will center the peep with the hood giving you an additional reference point on draw.

Me too, I look at one site pin and it looked like 3 pins really close together.  Last year at Christmas
my loving wife spent $60 at Neil's pro shop and bought me a clarifier peep site.  It is a metal peep which is threaded on the inside to accept a screw-in insert which come in different strength lenses.  I only needed the weakest lens, for now.  The site pins are very sharp and clear now, the target is slightly fuzzy.   You really need to go to a pro shop to buy one, as you need to try the different lenses.   I did get by for a couple years by enlarging the peep hole, but I'm past that point now...
                      good luck, keep shootin'  Tom

You don't need a peep.  Throw the thing away and get a kisser button.  Practice and you will never go back.  Have killed deer for years and never had a need for one.  About 15 years ago I had a big old sack daddy 9 point come to my green field but before he go into my range it was getting dark and I  could not find him in my peep.  Ended up missing.  Next day that peep was gone.  Now understand you may loose some tight grouping during target practice but you will find your ability to shoot deer MUCH improved.

I wear bi-focals, as I can not read anything with out them... but looking thru a peep sight you can't use them period.  As others have stated, you look through the peep and your pin will go natural center.

I use a G5 Hunter peep, and it works great.

I wear trifocals with lots of prism ground in my lenses. I have found that nothing, not even ghost ring sights, will work for my bad eyes. I have gone to scopes on all of my guns, and just traded a 686 .357 mag with a 4" barrel because I just couldn't hit anything past about 20 feet away. Shooting skeet is a totally hopeless endeavor anymore, and the last time I went bird hunting I was 1 for 36, and that bird decided to commit suicide by flying into my shot string.
I guess that's what comes with old age and bad genetics.

I agree, never used one and don't care to.. three anchor points, kisser to the corner of my mouth, knuckles to a spot on my jaw and touch the string to the tip of my nose..works great.

the peep is an anchor point plain and simple.  keeping it AND and kisser increases accuracy (unless of course you can't see through it).  the best peep i've found for bi/ tri-focaled people is the predators view peep.  it is also the best peep i have found for low light conditions.

SOOOOO... if you want more accuracy keep the peep.  if you are happy with the old "i can hit a pie plate at 25" mentality, ditch it.  for me, i'm extremely happy with the view (https://predatorsviewpeepsight.com/)
