Winchester 94 Hammer-Spring Compression ?

My first-time to remove my Hammer-Spring from the tang
on my  Winchester 94 .30-30
I did not know to use a retainer-pin to hold the compression...
D'oh...  what is the  best trick/gimmic  to compress it without
damaging the parts...  ?   Thanks.
