which barrel
« on: July 23, 2007, 07:14:39 AM »
I have a Contender and a 10 in. and a 14 in. .44 mag barrel. I've never hunted with one before, and intend to hunt deer and elk .  Would one barrel be better than the other?  Seems the 10 in would be easier packing, but would the 14 in have enough more velocity to make it's use better?  Thanks

Sounds like a question you have to answer on your own.  There are pros and cons to both barrels.  Velocity difference of 100 fps would be un-noticed by deer or elk.  10" will have more noise to shooter with different recoil than 14".  10" will be easier to carry than the 14".  14" will be easier to shoot over a rest.  10" will be easier to shoot off-hand.  If I had to pack it very far, I would practice, practice, practice and take the 10".  If I have a good stand to walk into, with good cover, I would take the 14" with a bi-pod or mono-pod to help support it.  Once again, practice, practice, practice before you go.

Another consideration is the distance you will be shooting; the 14" gives a flatter trajectory for an extra 50 yds. at least that's what I've found target shooting both.  I usually hunt with the 14" and it's still lighter than my DW with an 8" barrel.

BLHOF,    Thanks, that answer really helps, too. Didn't realize the extra inches would do that.  How far do you shoot?  Over  100 yards?
