Will I be shunned?
« on: June 02, 2003, 09:23:31 AM »
I have a confession.......after 20 years of shooting the Contender (pistol trim)exclusively, I have a desire for a custom Encore..........rifle. I'm looking into a long range varmit rig based off the Encore frame, but since the handgun version is heavy - I'm thinking of a 24-26" version. Will these thoughts get me shunned from the single shot pistol crowd? I'm at least staying with the single shot, break open trim!!

No Shunning Here.

I believe that TC offers a 22-250Rem in a 26" barrel and a .243Win in a 24" tube.  If you want a stock chambering for long-range varmints either one of these would work.

If you prefer as I do to shoot custom barrels, then I would stick to the 6mm chamberings.  You get a good selection of varmint bullets and a better ballistic coefficient than the 22cal pills.  My choices would be as follows.

1.).243Win Improved
2.)6mm Rem Improved
3.)6mm-284Win

Happy Varmint Hunting.

do what makes you happy-screw everyone else and what they think.   anyone who would pass judgement on something so trivial isnt someone i want to know anyway.  you are right;  that is awfully heavy for a pistol.

Sheesh!   Does this mean for me to continue hanging my hat here at the TC Handgun Forum I have to sell off all my custom Contender carbine barrels?

I'll add to Dalton's "6" list, but don't forget to get a couple of 17 cabine barrels as well.   You'll be glad you did.

Well, I'm undecided at this time as to which caliber to flavor this project in. I tossed around the 6mmBR, and the 6mm-284, and the 22-250. Kinda dropped the 22-250, because everybody and their brother seems to have something in this caliber. I like the wildcat route myself, you know, something that when your average range shooter asks you what your shooting  - he/she has no idea what your answer is. On the other hand the new Super Short Magnums have also caught my attention. Any thoughts on the matter?

This will be a heavy barrel rig, high magnification optics, bipod rig. I'm just not sure.............

Ladobe - the 17HMR interested me until I talked to some local shooters that have some time with them. Sounds like they get fouled pretty easily and are unreliable past the 150 yard mark. (Only speaking second hand)

Oops, looks like this should go to the single shot rifle forum.

Good choice! You'll really enjoy that Encore as a long range varmint gun.  I think the T/C action is superior to the bolt action because you just break the action open, put your spent shell back in the box, and load a fresh round.  No fumbling.  I did this with a Contender and I can't imagine using any other action.  As for calibers, I don't know what to recommend.  Some people who shoot with bull barrels in varmint bolt actions say that by using the .223 they can see the bullet hit the target because recoil is so light. I don't know if .223 will work that way with an Encore.  If I wanted a true long range varmint rig, I'd use one of the 6mm's.

P.S. Get a good powerful scope with target knobs to go with it.

T/C Nimrod...

In regards to the 17 Hummers, I have to totally disagree with what your local users have told you.   I own two of them, including the very first Contender barrel made for them from Bullberry - Fred's prototype - and I believe I may have been the first to have a privately owned Hummer worldwide (4/02).   I just returned from Digger Wars held last week in northern Nevada where 3 of us took about 2000 diggers, and my Bullberry Hummer got the call for the lions share of all my shooting there.   In 4 full days of shooting, I ran a few patches through it only once, and never lost precision right up until it got put away to come home.   The majority of the shots (and kills) were in the 150-225 yard range (these diggers had been shot at before), but I was also taking shots and making kills out beyond 300 yards on them.   Beldings are small, but the kill to shot ratio was still well over 90% for the whole trip.   My Marlin 17VS did at least as well, although I held it to about 200 yard shots with its lower mag scope, and a pard shooting his CZ Hummer also shot it well above 90% - also made some kills out over the 300 yard mark.   True we didn't have much wind to contend with, and we both shoot with laser rangfinders right on our benches, but our only rigs that bettered the Hummers this trip were our 17 Ackley Hornets.    Another kewl thing I learned on the trip, both my Hummers shoot the V-Max and TNT to very near the same POI, so I was switching back and forth on the ammo and still getting the kills.   My Bullberry has had about 4500 rounds through it now - the Marlin only about 300.   Anyway, here's the link to a picture from the trip of a Belding that took a TNT at 309 yards from the Bullberry Carbine No.1.

(BTW - its a 800X600 pic - kick it to full size for the best look).

The only way you can redeem yourself is to send all those nasty carbine barrels to me.  I can handle the peer pressure.  I love Carbines.  I am trying to figure out what scope to oput on the 7-30 I got from Norm.  Definately a rifle scope, something that is good in low light.  I am about sick of pistol scopes, I dont need a handicap when it comes to putting meat in the freezer.

I agree with Ladobe, I just got back from SD shooting prarie dogs and took along a 14" 17HMR to play with. Made several 200yd kills with out much trouble at all. As far as cleaning it, I went about 300rds before cleaning and I only cleaned it out of guilt. It's accuracy hadn't fallen off at all yet. I consider the 17HMR perfect out to 200yds.  KN

Get really exotic and go 240 Weatherby Magnum, that's a "6" with some Umph to it!  It is also narrower in body than the 6 by 284 or the 6-06, so you don't have to sweat pressure issues, it's like having a factory wildcat.  With a 26 inch barrel, you can sizzle those little pills.
