Used one on a Carolina whitetail without problems.  Factory ammo, about 75 yards, downhill.  High shoulder impact / boiler room exit.  Dead right there, but I tore up a little more meat than normal.  Can't remember bullet weight, but it was a soft point.

In the past I hunted with a borrowed M98 in 8MM.  The rifle I used had taken other bear, deer, elk, and moose in the hands of the owner in the Smokey River country of Alberta.  I shot this bear in the ear as it looked at me from around a tree.

I have used an 8mm Mauser 98k for deer hunting in Wisconsin for many years. Very effective. Took a few deer with it. I used hand loads with 200 grain soft point and sometimes 220 grain soft points. In the Africa forums a hunter recently took a large Kudu in Nambia with the 8mm Mauser, great picture and story also. The 8mm is a great big game cartridge.

It's been years, but my Father (when he was alive) was a master hunter with his trusty 1936 vintage sporter in 8mm.  He used a classic aperture sight and busted 99% of the deer he shot in the spine, where the neck meets the back.  We hunted in Polk County in Wisconsin, and I watched him shoot more than one running deer with that combination.  He was simply an amazing rifle shot on moving targets.  Probably had something to do with his being a tail gunner for a while on B-17s before winning a slot in pilots school.  We would practice moving targets by propping a 5 gallon pail on the slope in the quarry and shooting under it to get it moving.  We'd blast away at it as it rolled and tumbled down the side of the quarry, and in this way I learned lead and follow through.  But I could never match him.

The 8 X 57 is simply a wonderful cartridge and anyone who ignores it is missing out on a truly outstanding hunting cartridge.  It is easily in a class large enough for big bears in a strong action.

I've shot some deer with mine.  They tended to drop much quicker after hit than when I used a smaller cal. rifle.  One ran a bit, the others just dropped, and not spine hit either.  I was impressed.  I shot five deer with .30 mags., and those hit with the 8mm dropped quicker, and all were hit in the vitals.  Not a definitive study, just my experience.

I have a Yugo M48 and it is a great rifle.  So far I have used S&B ammo and it will group 1 1/2" at 100 yards.  Just recently purchased a used H&R handi in 35 Whelen.  Took that to the range and it seems to do ok too.  Not sure what I will use this hunting season.   ;D
Why is there never enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it again?

I was hunting hogs in Tennessee and met a man from Washington state, who had a M-98 and had killed 10 elk in 11 shots with it.  He said that the first elk did not need the second shot, but he was new at elk hunting and got overexited.  He got his hog with no problem, the bullet having complete penetration through the gristle plate.  He was using the original box of American factory ammo.  What was unique about his rifle was that the stock was carved in Northwest Indian style.  He had a friend who was a master cedar carver, but who had become severely allergic to cedar.  He could still work walnut, though.  The work was outstanding, museum quality.  Other than the stock, the rifle was totally unchanged, including the sights.  As I found with my M-48, American ammo shoots to the point of aim at 100 yards, so he saw no need to change the signts.

I've got two 8mm rifles to hunt with, a customized Turk Mauser cut down to carbine length, and a RC Kar98k, either of which for hunting black bear, moose and whitetails.

I've got Norma Alaskan at 19 grain, and want to try out Sierra's 220 grain Gamekings.

The real question should be "Who doesn't and Why?"  ;)

I had the same question about the 8mm.  Then a friend told me that it was the low power ammo that was sold in the US that made people think that the 8mm was underpowered. I heard the factory ammo makers were afraid of people using it in the WWI era guns.

With that said, I just bought a m48 and am having a Bold trigger installed.  I have some surpluss 154 gr. ammo and some 196gr.

What works best for you?  and what factory ammo do you like?  Wolf, Privi, S&B

What reload formula do you use?

Thankyou

My rifles love the 196gr SPCE by S&B
But, check out Conley Precision ammo, looks great on paper, although alittle $$    www.cpcartridge.com
