GREEN MNT BARRELS

has anyone had any experience with these barrels?
just tried to order a replacement barrel for my T/C Hawken, think i want a 1-28 twist
they had just shipped all they had to Cabelas.

Green Mountain has been around for years and make a good barrel...The 1-28 twist would be proper for sabots and a pistol bullet...

I have accumulated several GM drop in barrels for TC Hawkens...

.40cal 1:48" round ball barrel
.54cal(.28ga) smoothbore barrels (2)
.58cal 1:70" round ball barre
.62cal(.20ga) smoothbore barrels (3)

All give very good performance as far as performance goes...however, each had nagging quality issues that had to be corrected to truly get them to "drop-in".
Two had such significant quality problems they were recalled and the breechplugs replaced.
They do not have quite the level of final polish, fit, and finish that TC barrels do, but they're close enough not to be a real bother.
Now that I have them all finalized I wouldn't get rid of any of them...just would have preferred not to have gone through things with each one.

CAUTION:
My advice is always ask first and do not buy one of their barrels that has a heli-coil in it.
And if you get one with a heli-coil, contact GM immediately, tell them what you ended up with, and that you want it corrected.
They'll take it back and replace the breechplug and reblue everything again.

they called me back yesterday after noon and said they had 1  50 cal. 1-28 twist barrel left if i wanted it, i took it. will have to start over with load  i guess, do any of you have any ideas where to start?
will be shooting Buffalo bullet 385gr hp to start, or some think in that range, Goex fffg
i have a free elk hunt coming up in OCT. in N.M. but the catch is NO INLINES, NO SABOTS,
NO SCOPES (i can wear clothes)

Rex,

I recently purchased the 1:28 Green Mtn barrel with the intent of shooting longer and heavier bullets after witnessing the success of a shooter at the local range. He was using the 460 gr. with 100 gr. Goex and achieved a 3" group at 200 yards! See discussion in this forum:

Granted this guy knew his firearm very well!

Congratulations on your hunt opportunity and good luck on your hunt. Hunting in October in NM will/should give some good bugling action!

i remember that post, but had missed the part about the GM barrel, guess i will have some thing to work on. The guy that is taking me hunting in N.M. is an old friend of mine and he lives in Cimarron. I am not going to tell him about this barrel, i told him i had changed to a musket nipple, and it took him a few days to get ok with that.
He says that on this hunt in Oct. he can put a bull in my lap. so i am trying to do what he says.

My question is a little different, do any of you have a Thompson Center Hawken replacement by Green Mountain in .32 cal. How does it handle? Is it too heavy to carry all day? Workmanship good, etc.?

i saw some Montana rifle bullets in 450 gr at cabelas may try a box $20.00 for 50
3 lube rings huge bullets

Rex,

I am learning alot about twist in a barrel and bullet performance. For example, when I purchased my encore 209x50 with the 1:28 twist I could not hit a 3-foot square piece of paper at 50 yards to save my life using conicals. I was trying the weights in the upper 200's to the upper 300's and nothing worked (I discovered later I was using too much powder; 120+ grains!). I could get sabots and power-belt bullets to work. I was told I would need to get the custom barrel in 1:48 to shoot the conicals (required for hunting in Colorado). Which I did and sure enough, the 360's shoot great. There is something to say about heavier, longer bullets needing a fast twist as I encountered with the guy shooting the 460 grain conical with 100 gr Goex. I was also trying to use too much powder...velocity can mess with the accuracy. I intend to try the heavier longer conicals and start out slow with the 1:28 GM barrel (mounted in the Renegade) increasing in 5gr increments. I discovered 95 gr works great with my 1:48 twist and 360 grain conicals. Just trial and error! Good luck!   8)

same here, my t/c hawkin shoots 245gr buffalo ballets real good with 80gr goex fffg
i had started with 777, 320gr bullets 100gr powder and could not hit the back stop.
i have some 385 buffalos and so 370 t/c maxi balls, and will buy a box of the 450's
i think i was using too much powder to start with.
