If you aren't confident then go with the Limbsaver slipon. It works great.
I finally took the plunge on grinding a recoil pad (I also changed my own brakes for the first time this year, was always unnerved by that). Anyway, the first one looked "okay"....maybe that is polite. It didn't turn out as well as I thought that it would. The second one was much better. If it is on a youth stock then I would say give it a try, you will probably replace the stock anyway right?
The good advice that I got from Gunnut on the Gunsmithing forum was to freeze the pad for 24 hours before starting to shape it, to use plenty of WD40 to lube the pad while shaping, and to be prepared to install and remove multiple times.
At Wal-Mart, we just put the Pachmayr slip on pad on clearance to $5, I THINK that it fits. Quick would know better. Might be worth a look. Otherwise, we sell the Limbsaver there too for $20.
