We're looking forward to the pix!

Someday we'll figure out how to post the drawings. (I guess gif or jpgs would work) but I'd like to make available drawings in dxf or dwg formats downloadable too.

I visited gettysburg a couple of weeks ago. The carriages are quite nice, and were identical for all of the guns I looked at up close. They were all cast of what appears to be aluminum.

hey Matt, looks like ya'll had a good time......... some of the battlefields use aluminum or cast iron carriages, less maintenance for the caretakers.

Cast Iron Carriages
« Reply #9 on: July 31, 2007, 08:51:13 AM »
The gun carriages at most of the older National Military Parks are reproduction cast iron.  They were made around the turn of the last century, so most are antiques in their own right.  Some of the newer parks such as Wilson's Creek only have a few guns and they are mounted on aluminum carriages.

Although most of the carriages on display look great, they may be heavily rusted on the inside (they are hollow for the most part).  When I worked at Shiloh in the late 70s I saw two different carriages collapse. One that was bumped by a parked car which came out of gear, and the other that had about 10 kids crawling on it.  No one was hurt fortuntely.

All the iron carriages are the same with the exception of the size of the trunnion mounts.

Yes the carriages are cast,

and many of the Napoleons are actually six pounders

over-bored a couple inches deep with the muzzle ring trimmed off.

I got in a heated discussion about this with a certified park guide on this matter.

But all in all, it is a beautiful place to visit.

Hi Matt
Don't forget the Coehorn mortars.  They have an unusual sled for the Confederate 24 pounder. I don't have a digital picture but wonder what the forum knows about it.  If you get a chance can to take a pic and post it.  If not I could find the 35 mm and scan it Thanks copdoc
