Hornady 300 grain XTPs on 300+ pound hogs
« on: June 03, 2003, 03:58:00 AM »
I have a box of 300 grain XTPs that I bought for some now-forgotten reason. Are they good on hogs?  Or are hard cast big-meplat bullets better?

Are we talking 44 mag or 45 LC here?  I hit a boar with a 300 XTP in my SRH 454 it was pushed by 22 grains of 2400 in a 45 LC case.  The bullet hit the shoulder and totally fragged.  It really messed up the lungs.  On my last boar hunt a used a 310 LBT and it performed superbly.  I do not trust a bullet that comes unglued on dangerous game.

What 300 grain bullet were you shooting in the 45 and at what velocity?  The XTP MAGNUM bullets that I've tried are very strong bullets.  I'm using them in my Freedom Arms 454 with 32 grains of 296 and getting 1600 fps.    Not a max load but the groups at 100 yards are outstanding.  I shot 2 deer with that bullet last year and they barely expanded.  If you were using the other 300 (I think it has two crimp cannelures),  you should try the mag bullet before you give up on the XTP completely.  GS

I was not using the XTP mag.  I was hoping the 300 XTP grain was big enough to hold together.  I have not chronoed the load but it should be over 1350 FPS.  I cannot say I have given up on the XTP but I do prefer taking game with a bullet that I have cast myself, it adds a lot of satisfaction to the hunt.

I have killed 2 hogs over 300 pounds. (1) around 425 ponds, the (2) around 350 pounds. I shot both of them with a 44MAG. with 300 grain XTPs. Shot each of them 4 time, no pass throws. Works great for hogs. With 2400 power.

Well I've only used that bullet on one Rudy. Reason is I won't do it again. I didn't like the results even tho it was a one shot kill. Boar was rapidly approaching me directly from the front. Bullet was placed between the eyes at about 15' or so. Hog went down rat now. BUT the bullet was found lodged just under the hide near the right shoulder with total separation of jacket and core. If I had needed penetration I'd not have gotten it. I've never again used that bullet to take a hog. I'd go with a hard cast if it was me.

Thanks. I've often wondered what those were good for.  Plinking, I guess. Pretty expensive plinking bullets, though.

I really like the 300gr XTP (.429) bullet. I have shot it extensively in my 50 cal muzzleloader and few 44mag rifles. Does an impressive job on whitetails.
I recently had the same question as you regarding the 300XTP and large hogs. In the end I decided to go with a 300gr Swift A-Frame bullet and was glade that I did. The Swift may have been sturdier than necessary but it put a 300+ lb hog down quickly, with only one shot.
I originally worked up my load for the 300gr bullet by using the Hornady XTP and was able to use the same load with the Swift bullet. They also had the same point of impact out to 85 yards, which was as far as I fired them with the open sighted revolver.

The XTP bullet is fine for soft skinned game. But a hog especially a big one ain't a soft skinned game animal. I love the XTPs on deer.
