Tension Barrel water cooled .223 PD gun?
« on: July 29, 2007, 11:59:14 AM »
I have a very nice cut rifled 1 in 15 twist 22 inch .224 barrel blank.  I was considering building a tension barrel water cooled PD rifle using the stubbing process with a coolant filled jacket over the barrel from in front of the chamber to the muzzel.  A little pump pushing Glycol through a coil in an Ice bucket should be able to fire as fast as you can load and never get it hot.  Would be kind of a purpose built rifle, high speed .223 40gr bullets as fast as you can shoot.  Could be fun?  Larry

Have you other guys noticed Trotter come's up with some

mighty OFF the WALL ideas??  The man has one hell of an imagination.

Sure wish I'd had one like that a few dozen times Larry.
Be sure to share the project and pictures with us.

I'll bet you could just seal a larger tube around it and fill that with coolant.  Maybe have an
adjustable seal, or caps/plugs to change fluid now and then.

A few yrs ago I read an article about someone made up a hose to blow CO2 thru the bore to cool
'em down.  Anyone on here try it, or know how it worked out??

I was concerned about the rapid chilling causing a warp in the tube so never tried it.
But, sure could easy enough with a flow meter.

Many a time on the p'dog fields I've got 'em too hot.  Gotta pay attention to it with a bolt, or semi auto.  Don't think I could heat up a NEF very fast.  OR can ya??
With a bolt gun on a long day I've burned up right near 600 rnds alone.  For yrs we lived among the p/d's but, only had 100 cases.  Start out loaded, and make a cold beer run to the house and load 'em up again when they were shot up.  Many a day I fired 400 doing that.  Got a lot of 98/100, but, never made a 100/100  for some reason. Guess what blew that score was trying the long shots and missing.
