Flints
« on: July 29, 2007, 03:48:11 PM »
How do you know what sized flints to get for your locks?  Width I can figure out, but what about length?  I have a Lyman GPR and a Siler Lancaster style.

Thanks,

Well, the manufacturers usually make a recommendation for their rifle...however, lacking that, flints are usually sized by the width of the frizzen...ie: my frizzens are 3/4" wide and that the size flints I buy.

length is determined by each shooter or owner. The length, or depth of the hammer jaw, and the use of a leather or a lead keeper to hold the flint in place, and the position of the flint as it strikes the frizzen,, as it's held in the hammer is a variable. The shooter adjusts the flint.
If size is a kwandrie whilst purchasing, buy squares. 3/4x3/4,,5/8x5/8,,1/2x1/2.

Some hold bevel down, some hold bevel up,,some find a sweet spot with just that special curve or tip to the stone,,

Remember, it's the frizzen that makes the sparks! The rock is just hard enough, and sharp enough,, to scrap the molten sparks of metal off the frizzen..

Where should the flint strike the frizzen?  Half way up?  Three quarters?

All my flinters have ignition plenty fast enough for anyone.  The locks on my rifles and pistols are:  Silers, L & R and R. E. Davis.  On each of the them the flints strike 1/3-1/4 of the way down from the top of the frizzen, depending on how new the flint is.

One thing that might make the whole flint positioning thing easier to remember is simply this...you want to try various flint positions in your particular lock to find the one that appears to give the best slightly downward/slicing/shaving angle at the time of impact into the frizzen...that might be bevel up or down...doesn't matter...the end result is the goal.

And...this relationship will gradually change as you put more and more shots on a flint because the flint begins to ever so slowly wear back shorter and shorter, getting further away from the frizzen so that by the time it hits the frizzen it will be hitting it so low it may not even flip the frizzen open any longer...reposition it closer and keep on shooting

Thank you,

What Im looking for is the 3/4 X 7/8 for both my locks.  Ive shot plenty of percussion, but am really just getting into the flints.
