I've been using the TC Encore rod guides for quite a while, the collar that slips behind the ejector claw needs to be thinned just a little, but they work fine. But it's nice they make em specially for us now!! ;)

Thanks for the heads up,

Tim

I must be missing something. I really don't see the point in it.     Dale

I think (just a SWAG) that when you pull your juiced up brush back thru the barrel, this little gizmo prevents the splashing of solvent from going all over your scope, you, and everything else on your bench. I think they are bore caliber specific so they somehow lock into the chamber.

Ok Dale, here's a pic of the Encore guide in use, there's a flat on the collar to allow it to go past the ejector/extractor, then you rotate it between the barrel face and ejector/extractor in the same way as the Encore bore guide, as was stated, the guide does just that, aligns the cleaning rod with the bore to protect the throat. ;)

I do understand the purpose of it now but have you ever heard of anyone doing damage to the throat during cleaning? The rods I use are aluminum, brass or fiberglass. all which are softer than steel. Would they not be damaged before the barrel?          Dale

You bet they will, they pick up abrasives and will wear on the bore just like sandpaper. Brass, aluminum and plastic coated rods are the worst offenders. To give you a good example of extreme wear, I've seen muzzleloader barrels with the rifling completely worn out of the muzzle from the ramrod being used to load and clean, that's with either a wood or synthetic rod.

Tim that is interesting. I think for something like that to happen it would take many years.     Dale

More rifle bores are damaged from improper cleaning than most likely any other reason, and in the case of the muzzleloader, I wore the muzzle almost smooth in a .50 cal flintlock in 5 yrs of shooting and had to cut 6" off the barrel to get back to crisp rifling, so it doesn't take as much as you think. Using a bore guide for cleaning is paramount to maintaining accuracy if you clean regularly, but for a lot of old timers, they clean seldom so it's a non-issue.

Tim thanks for the info. I may need to rethink my cleaning practices.    Dale

I use a piece of sized brass with the primer pocket drilled a few thousanths larger than my cleaning rod.  It has worked for me for years.  Larry
