coreloks or interlocks in .257 roberts
« on: July 30, 2007, 09:21:11 AM »
at the risk of starting an argument any one have any opinion on which would be a better Blacktail deer bullet, the  .257 cal 100 gr Rem corelokt or the Hornady Interlock.  I load them to about  2900 Fps (I have a Ruger 1b with a 26 inche barrel in .257 roberts). both shoot well though the hornady seems to have a slight accuraccy edge but both can stay inside 5 inches at 300 yards, until the barrel heats of course (it is a number one after all)

While we all have our favorites and I'm not different in all honesty it makes no real world difference. Both are conventional cup and core bullets and have both been around and proven successful for a great many years. You're using a standard (non magnum) round that's not pushing them fast enough to challenge either brand. Both will provide excellent performance in your rifle on the game you're after. Just pick the one you prefer and have the most confidence in. For me that would generally be the more accurate in my rifle which in your case you say is the Hornady.

I've probably shot more Hornady bullet than any other but Remington bullets aren't far behind with Nosler and Sierra coming in right behind those two and I'm not even sure which of them I've shot the most of. All others combined aren't even close to those four for number of jacketed bullets I've fired.

I have helped my brother with the skinning chores on deer he has killed with the .257 Roberts.  The performance of the Hornaday Interlock has been outstanding.  They have held up in his standard .257 Roberts, and his .257 Roberts Improved.

as for cost effectiveness, well the remington is cheaper because i can buy them in bulk (which i did) but I just got back from the range and once again the hornady had an edge in accuracy. I also am pleased that my number 1 has not changed zero during the last year.  I think what I will do is buy a box or two or the Hornady and load them up. I shoot my AR-15A2 and my .222 Rem for the most part do to ammo cost.  So two boxes of ammo and my Archery Deer target I practice with should be fine as I do not need to shoot more that 10 shots with it per range session do to the amount of prone, kneeling and standing I do with AR.  Thats still plenty of practice with my rifle.   I also rediscovered  that my rifle shoots much better resting on my hand than a sandbag or coat or a hard surface.

I don't think either would be a bad choice but you seem to be leaning toward the Hornady so that's the direction I think you should go.  Good luck.

I think the Remington C-L bullet is a good hunting bullet.  And I have a fair supply of them, but I needed to make a choice.  With the cost of bullets going up every day I decided that in one caliber I would use the C-L bullets for practice, and save my Hornaday bullets, and the Nosler PT for hunting.  While all three bullets are good on deer the Hornaday and the Nosler PT are ballistically more efficient then the C-L.  I realize the difference is only a couple of inches at 400 yards.  But factoring in all the other opportunities for error that two inches could make the difference in a kill.  And the 400+ pounds the Hornaday delivers over the C-L at 400 yards could be a major factor in putting game down.

While I use 400 yards as an example it would be an extreme opportunity to cause me to take such a shot.  You know something like a hunting partner wounds a deer and it is about to go over the ridge, and it is the last chance to bring the hunt to an end.  If that “what ever” came along I would want to be using the most efficient bullet of the three named.

Two of the tools used in helping me come to my conclusion are my Chrony, and my Sierra Ballistics program.

Either will do fine.  Used to use the pre-Interlock Hornady 100gr in a .25-06 at a chronographed 3300fps.  Out of 15 head, only recovered one bullet.  From the head-on shot it stopped at the pelvis, the rest were pass throughs.

Whichever is the most accurate.  I use Hornady Interlocks and Sierra Gamekings with equally productive results in my .25-06.  IMHO, both of these are a higher quality than Rem. Corelokts, but that is my preference.  I would go with either the Hornady or Sierra.

Not so fast...This is a major decision, might take days of research...I used to read about hunting Blacktails, when my dad took us to the barber shop back in the late '60s....Back when Outdoor Life and Field & Stream were worth reading....Now I have killed whitetails with both CoreLokts and InterLokts, out of my .243, I must say I can't tell a difference, except my particular gun groups CoreLokts...Now gentlemen we have a perfect situation, one gun prefers Hornadys one Remingtons....

I figure the only way to settle this is have me come over and take a crack at those blacktails with my CoreLokt and you take a crack with your
InterLokts....Then we can take out the range finder (I'll bring mine) and see which one traveled the fartherest....Then we can have a bit of refreshments (on me) and report back to these guys...

Just let me know which week works for you, I'll try to fit it in.... ;D

Well I am sure going to give it my best effort this year.  I am even going to buy some water proof boots, pants and jacket this year.  For those of you have have never hunted black-tails,  in Western Washington, you will be soaked to the bone the first 50 yards into the brush.  The ferns are waist high and hold ALOT  of water on their leaves.  If I could afford the gas for the scouting trips I would much prefer to hunt Mule deer In the blue mountains. Hopefully  I'll put an interlock in a blacktail  and report back with a picture of the deer and bullet if I get lucky.  They are roughly the size of medium to smaller Whitetail deer so I would expect the same performance I have read about from Whitetails hunters.   We also have whitetails in Washington way up in the north east corner  (also two types of Elk).

I dont know about the 100 grain core locks, but the 117 grainers perform like crap, any deer I or my ol man have shot with them have all ran far before dying,  the hornadys would be the best choice that you have mentioned, i have shot a few with the 120 grain partitions and couldnt have asked for better results.

As you are a reloader - I would use both of them as follows. Practice and varmits - PSP-CL's  as the price and performance is right / Annual hunting - Hornady or Sierra Game King's as you want to ensure your one or two shots are the best they can be - a box of 50 should last years.

A box of 50 should last years? There must be something wrong with the bullet's I buy. The come in box's of 100 and if I'm real careful last a couple weeks! ;D
