300 Win Mag Barrel!!
« on: July 31, 2007, 09:59:30 AM »
I emailed Mark at BPI, found out they have some 300 Win Mag barrels for the Optima Elite in stock, he hooked me up with Thomas and I ordered one of the blued 26"ers, should have it in a couple weeks, hopefully, but they're in the middle of inventory and it may be delayed, probably be that long before I can get to the range again anyway.

Nope, I bought myself a Cabelas shooting shirt for $15 and put a double layer of Kick-eez pad in the shoulder pocket, and there'll be lead shot in the thumb-hole stock!! ;D

Tim,
Are the Optima Elite guns any better than the Handi's?  I've been debating on which one to buy.  I like the feel of the Optima but I've just always loved the Handi's.  I used H&R shotguns as a kid hunting rabbits and squirrels here in Kentucky.  What is your opinion?  Sorry, don't mean to put you in a corner.

They're different, a cross tween an Encore and a Handi, better lock-up and stronger frame than a Handi, but not as expensive as the Encore, similar barrel underlug as the Encore but slightly smaller hinge pin, but uses an improved version of the Handi latch engagement. Trigger is more complex than a Handi, but simpler than the Encore, not as easy to hone the trigger as either of the other two. :-\

Nice going Quick...

308:

Another nice thing about the Elites...They don't kick near as bad as what the Handi's do in the heavier calibers...because of their stock design and already fitted with a very good recoil pad...

Tim, I hope the 300 works well for you. I am interested in a 300 Heavy barrel when they come out. I am even more interested in a 338WM heavy barrel, I already own a very good 300WM Rem, but at this time I have no 338.

I hope to see a range report soon.

Thanks, I wouldn't have minded a bull barrel, but from what Mac learned, the barrels that are on the way are standard contour also, IF they're actually on the way!!! ::)

Got it, looks good except for one little spot where the finish is worn on the edge of the chamber end of the barrel, it wasn't packaged very well, the bare barrel was just stuck in 3 styrofoam donuts in cardboard box, , it was noticably loose in the box before I opened it.  :'(

Cleaned it up and mounted it in my frame, fits just like the 7mm-08 barrel with a very slight gap at the bottom of the barrel between chamber face and standing breech. Took measurements for COL using the 150gr Nosler Partition Moly, touches the lands at 3.413", Nosler's recommended COL is 3.340", so I can load long and still touch the lands with the lightest bullet I'd shoot in it.

Headspace appears to be within tolerance at .003" below the barrel face, not ideal, but with the .001"to .002" barrel to frame gap, still less than the SAAMI max of .006". I think I'll form a false shoulder on them to eliminate all headspace on the first firing so the brass will last bit longer, and it sure doesn't hurt accuracy.

Now to round up a scope rail for it, should have ordered one earlier this week, but forgot about it, Sportsmans Warehouse may have them. :-\

More later,

Tim

Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't carry anything for CVAs even tho they sell the Wolf and Optima!! The Warne 9.3 Maxima M980 bases also fit the Winchester X150 and Apex as well as all round barreled CVAs and Traditions, you'd think they would carry them but don't ,had to order the Warne bases from Brownell's, they fit fine, but don't give any allowance for positioning the scope as the one-piece base does, but no one has the one piece steel Durasight base, so these will have to do. Fortunately, the Mueller 3-10x44 TacII has perfect eye relief for me mounted in medium Burris Signature Zees, when I mount the rifle, I have to creep just a tad forward to get a full field of view, which is better than getting scoped by the 300 Win Mag recoil!! :o Range trip next Wednesday I think, have a batch of Nosler 150gr partition molys loaded up with H1000 to test it out with, that's Nosler's recommended accuracy load with a load density up to 103%, thought I'd give it a try..... to start out with any way. :D

Tim, is this going to be a rifle test or a scope endurance test.          Your scope is going to be like a tuning fork. To have a stable, strong scope mounting platform, your rings need to have the maximum spread you can utilize. This takes the maximum stress off of the scope. If you use the Caldwell DRT rest, the stress will be magnified, as the rifle will have less movement & the shock loading at the rings will be dramatically increased.
Your potential for accuracy is not as great this way, I would rethink this set up, doesn't cost hardly anything when compared with the overall setup anyway.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing, just not in the same terms, but I just don't feel real comfortable with the rings that close on that size scope. Although I'd like the steel Warne bases, the Durasight still looks like a better option, I ordered one earlier this afternoon!! ;D

Thanks,

Tim

Tomorrow, I have H1000 and IMR4350 loads with the 150gr Nosler PT Molys loaded up, but also have a box of Federal 180gr Speer Hot-cor factory ammo to run thru it first during a little break in and getting on paper at 100yds, then I'll clean it good and start in on the handloads. That and 7 H&Rs will be making the range trip an all day affair!! ;D

Shot the H4350 loads today, all but one level, started getting flat primers ½gr shy of the Nosler max, so I stopped. Actually, the Federal 180gr Speer Hot-cors shot about as good as I could ask for, for an out-of-the-box factory barrel, the 300 Win Mag barrel does shoot fairly well, the first 2 targets are the first 6 shots fired at 100yds, took 2 shots to get on paper at 25yds, so not bad for nothing done to the barrel.

I cleaned the barrel farily good with Montana Extreme 50BMG solvent, then started shooting the 150gr Nosler PT Molys with the IMR4350, accuracy was acceptable, but nothing to get excited about, may not have got the bore clean enough after shooting the plain jacketed bullets in it, but I think it was clean enough. I'll clean it real well and flitz the bore before I shoot the H1000 loads in it.

More later,

Tim

Thanks for sharing...

What was your seating depth of the bullets Quick...Most of us have found that these rifles seem to like to have the bullets jumped a bit...and looks like your 71 grain of IMR 4350 shows real promise...
