96/44 mannlicher
« on: July 31, 2007, 10:03:10 AM »
Folks,

I just picked up a very nicely stocked 96/44  carbine with a mannlicher style stock.  I first I thought it was a custom.  But the wood looks like ruger walnut nicely figured walnut.  Was this a std production model?

thanks

bob

Model 96/44

Don't think it's factory, all were birch/hardwood carbine style stocks.

I would think custom. Any pics?

Looks like a Pacmyer (sp) pad, too.  I would venture to say that's a custom. Nice, though. I'm sure it's a VAST improvement over the factory stock dimensions, too.
Could always just call ruger w/ the serial number and ask.

It's a custom stock.

1) No Ruger's been issued with wood that good, since the early #1's from 1968-1973.

2) The Model 96's have only been issued with the peanut butter hardwood stock w/forend barrelband, ala 10/22 Carbine.

3) When Ruger does  do a full-length stock, ala RSI/Internationals, the forward sling swivel is not an Uncle Mike's Q.D. - In fact they're not Q.D. at all, they're a wrap-around stirrup-type bar, anchored at both sides of the forend with the sling threaded through it.
