any good trapping books on the market today?
« on: June 03, 2003, 09:50:29 AM »
:-) Hi:

Does anyone know of a good general trapping book that is on the market today?  The only trapping book I  have is Hawbaker's  " Trapping North American Furbearers". That book is a real good book, but it was made back around 1974. I was looking for something more recent. Also , are there any trapping books that come in hardcover?

                                                                           Thanks,

                                                                   coyote trapper1928

Hey!  You'll probably get a list..and I'll give you a start.  For coyotes / fox Sullivan's canine 2000, Doubins Dirt holes, and Leggets Autobiography pretty much cover the basics.  In addition to these I like Pedersen's Problems and solutionsIII to get you thinkin.

Regardless of which you feel is better or best I highly recomend reading multiple authors.

There are so many books on trapping since the 70s that it can be an overload.  But read all you can and  then find out what works for you and use it but dont be caught in a narrow mindset, keep an open mind and have change up sets for  whatever animals you are trapping

All of the books books by Charles and Paul Dobbins are good common sense instruction.  Land Sets & Trapping Techniques by Charles Dobbins is a good all around book I recommend.  Ace

If you going the NTA, you get a really nice trapping book that i never knew about. the only trapping books ive read is Dobbin's. They are great and loaded with information. worth ever single penny! i wish i would have read these books along time ago. the books ive read were land sets and trapping techniques and dirthole and its variations. great books.

You definately need to get more books.
The Hawbaker book was one of the first books I bought and it cost me years worth of success because of the antiquated B.S. in it.
Good books are writen by;

both of the Dobbins boys
Johnson
cronk
Milligan
O Gorman
helfrich
Barringer
Red o'Hern (highly recomend)
Kyle Katz -same as above
Weiland
Marsyada
Faler
Schmidtt
Krause
Grahm
the Leggets
Sullivan
Newt
Slim
many others

Books I don't recomend:
Anything by Austin Passamonte

I also think that if you are new, you should hold off on the old masters untill your learning curve has developed.
I am talking about
J Curtis Grigg
O L Butcher
E J Daily
Hawbaker
maybe some others too

DON'T get me wrong, I am not putting the old masters down, I just think that their stuff should be held off on untill new people  have more education under the old belt.
They are great reading.

Thanks for all the replys!  I narrowed the books down to one of the Dobbins books, a book called the compleate book of trapping by bob gilsvik , trapping the eastern brush wolf &  a book called farmland fur trapping.

                                                                Thanks,

Dont just read the book once.  Read it several times .  Ive always picked up something and usually a very important item  in rereading books.  Try it you will see.  Even if you set book aside for a month and reread it something will come up.   Happy reading  RdFx
