SAMCC July Newslatter
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:43:42 AM »
Dear Members and Gunners,
The mid year shoot was well attended with 11 guns on the line, nice to see for a change.
On the 8 July Pete, Lou, Douglas, Katherine, Liz and I had the opportunity to exhibit the cannon club at the Baynesfield Estate open day. Besides the other interesting stands, a lot of interest was generated in the club. A R100.00 donation was made to the club from the Estate for the gunpowder used in demonstrating the cannons.

Scores for July:
   Hamilton   Don       46  (3)         1st   overall
              Friend                      Brian             46  (7)         1st   overall
              Beach                       Fay       42 (14)        2nd  overall
              McCain                    Patrick          40 (14)        3rd  overall
              Dickens   Douglas       33 (16)        1st  on handicap
              Grayson                   Don               35 (11)        2nd on handicap
              Kingsford-Smith     Clifford         35 (10)       3rd on handicap
              Beach   Stan       38 (8)
              Visser   John       37 (10)
              Willers   Pete       29 (11)

The guest on the day, shooting for his very first time and with the ships cannon as well,
Jean with a 28, well done.
The windy conditions on the range made it difficult to shoot the balloons, they were never in one position for long, but That side managed to shoot more than This side (they cheated of course).

THE NEXT SHOOT IS ON THE  5TH AUGUST 2007 AT SAPREF

Double D, 1st handicap, does that mean you still have the trophy for the august match?

I return the trophy for the August Match and get it only if I win it again.

I am going to make a serious run at reducing the handicap.

I shot the Club gun .  I use the club furnish balls and felt wads.  I have noticed the guys who shoot well us a patched ball.  I have acquired balls and patches to fit the bore of the gun.

Do you get to practice, or is it only at the match you get to shoot?

Double D, this line might come in handy while you guys are in the heat of battle at the cannon match..........."Don't swear boys , shoot them!" :Chaplain George Smith, 22/23 January 1879 Rorke's Drift. hey, it worked for them, course they didn't have cannons.........good luck!

No practice at the matches.  Fire two relays of 6 Rounds each. Best five rounds score.  Handicap is the average of your last 6 match scores subtracted from 50.

Lance having been to Rorkes Drift and studied that battle pretty close,  I'll bet Chaplin Smith and the good Lord found it fairly easy to forgive those boys their sins after that battle.

The say the movie Zulu gives a good represenration of the battle.  I have the movie on VHS, and two DVD's.

Cannons didn't help real well over at  Isandlwana.  I've been there also and when you see where 20,000 Zulu's lined up it gives you the chills!!

This the view  from  the head of the the Impi.
