What caliber shoots best in the handi ?
« on: August 02, 2007, 03:53:07 PM »
I like my 45-70 so much I want to buy another rifle. I need one that is accurate, fast etc. it's to carry in my truck for coyotes but an ocassional deer. I was thinking .243 but after the post I read, I'm hesitant. I can shoot from my truck legally as I'm a little handi -capped.

If you're referring to snakeskinner's thread, that's a superlight, not a 243 that I'd recommend to many shooters, of all the Handi calibers and barrel contours, that's got to be one of the most trouble prone, but even it can be made to shoot, mine is acceptable accurate and it's only been to the range once!

The  30-30, 7mm-08, 270, 280 and 30-06 are probably the most consistently accurate of Handi calibers, but I wouldn't exclude any others except the 44mags, although current production 44mags have improved.

I think the best are the 45/70, .223 and the best of mine is the .220 Swift  ;D ;D ;D  But you have to get that one made by a good gunsmith.

This is a tough one to answer as any one CAN BE the most accurate as a gun is kinda its own identy.

In my case my 223 Ultra is my most accurate, but my 243 Ultra is right there. Just slightly behind in overall accuarcy. Then there is my Maxi, its no slouch either!! All CAN shoot under an inch at 100.....

What kind of accuracy do you need?

My vote for the most accurate would be the 30-30 and the 45/70.

It depends on what you want out of the rifle , 223 , 22-250 , 30-30 , 45/70 would be my top choices .

I dunno what is up with the rest of y'all but in my experience 357 Max (I've had 3 of 'em) shoots 357 Magnum and 357 Maximum loads as accurately as my 30/30s - I've had 3 of them too  ;)... And all but one of 'em shoots 38spl quite well. The one I have now doesn't shoot 38spl as well as the others I've had, but it is definitely meeting the standards set by my other guns for 357 Magnum and 357 Max loads!

And I have to agree with cwlongshot, any one CAN be most accurate - each one is an individual - as is each shooter.

Just my contribution...

Cheers

I'm partial to my 30-06, I think it shoots better than all my other Handi's.  Maybe it's just because I carry and shoot it more.  I can consistantly bust a 4" clay target out to 500 yards with it.  I don't care how close the shots are to one another.  My concern is can it hit what I am aiming at.  .223, and 243, Handi's, no not consistantly at those ranges.  Only the 30-06 will do that in my hands.

I have other guns that will do that also, but they are not Handis.
