How Old is my Colt Peacemaker
« on: August 03, 2007, 04:32:55 PM »
Back in the 70's I bought this Colt .22 Peacemaker new.   It's had lots of neglect as far as keeping it clean,  but I've never had any trouble with it.    Can't remember if it was in '72' or later.  It's barrel is 6" from tip of barrel to the cylinder.   Serial # 690XXX.   Does anyone have a close idea as to when it was manufactured?

4B,
You sure that serial number is correct?  It should have a prefix.  Maybe the serial number is G90XXX?  If so, it is 1974.

Hey mudstud:
My eyes deceived me.   I magnified that number and you're right.   That first digit is a 'G' and not a '6'.    Thank's for the info on it's manufacturing, I'll write that down.   :D

All this attentiion I've been giving to this little peacemaker made my wife want some pearl type grips for it.   Since I was going to the Gun Show across the border into Fort Smith, AR., I took it with me to see what I could find.

Before I got in the door, I was told the original grips are worth $100.    While browsing around one of the traders there looked it over said I sure need to keep it because it'll soon be a collectors item.
Another trader got out his book, looked the piece over real close, said it would be a gift if it's in 80% condition.   Said it might bring $250.
The ones I saw (of course they looked brand new) on the tables ranged anywhere from $800 for a gold plated, $950 for a blued, and a couple of new .45's for $1900.
This little Colt still works great, and I value it as much as anything I saw, and that's all that counts really.
No one had the exact Grips needed for it, but a Dealer said he'd try and get a pair for me.

FourBee, You say its dirty and neglected. Does it have any rust? If the rust is light ,if you will take a rag with a little orange oil on it and wipe the gun down. Just polish it each day for a week or two with the orange oil on the rag and you will be amaized at the diference in appearance it will make.
Wipe out the bore and chambers with a patch and lightly oil the action and base pin and you should be good to go. If you want pearl grips fine but don't sell the orgionals or the box if you have it. It will only increase in value. Regards, Byron

Hey Byron:
Thanks for the imput.   It doesn't have any rust, but it's well used.   The barrel is losing its blueing.  Was told to take it to a professional to get that done.
However, I do have an old .22 rifle that is lightly rusted.  So I'm going to try your Orange Oil technique on it.
Regards to You
Larry :)
