223 TSX for deer?
« on: August 03, 2007, 06:22:21 PM »
Surely someone has asked this before, but does anyone have firsthand experience with 1:12 or 1:9 twist Handi in 223 using 53 or 62 grain TSX?

1-12 with the 53 X. It was accurate.

Thanks, just wondering if anyone had tried.  Never tried the Barnes bullets in any flavor.  Been thinking about the 223 for awhile.  Have ordered some traditional Winchester 64 PP for this season.  Will get some Barnes put on the Christmas list.

Forgot, to mention, they give good, straightline penetration in the Whitetail rib cages I have seen, with a decent wound channel.

i know i've told this one before, but the article in Gun Digest years ago, "Out of Bounds Rounds" told of the 55 gr' Hornady spire points being Very effective on whitetails and mulies out of .223's and .22-250's or .220 Swifts.   today Hornady loads their 60 gr' spire point in the .22-250 for whitetail deer.   it is a very effective bullet, much beyond what you'd expect, and its price is very reasonable.

i recommend you try them.  i've loaded 'em for a landowner who has gotten Excellent results with both spire points, even in 1-in-12" twist rates in a .223.

the 55 gr spire point told of in that old Gun Digest was the one with NO cannelure.

Well, thanks SS.

I am always looking for cheap solutions.  I think that there are some of the Hornady 55's at the gun store over by the lake.

Nomosendero,

Care to share the load data?  I'm looking for an antelope round for my .223 Ultra Varmint 1:12

That was several years ago. I used LC brass, CCI primers , 53grX & H335 powder. I would start 15% under manual & work up slow.

Ha ha, I almost chocked when I read your post.  I THOUGHT you said 53gr of H335!  I thought, wow!, in a 223 case :o, now that's a compressed load ;D.  Then I saw the little "X".
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
