Super Redhawk or Super Blackhawk
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:19:33 AM »
Any opinions out there on the Super Redhawk and Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44mag. I'm in the market to add to my collection a Ruger 44mg wheel gun for black bear and deer hunting. WHat would be your preferance and why?

Thanks

Owned both, both were as accurate as the other. I would opt for the super red hawk, it is built like a tank.
The super blackhawk is tough also but mine needed a locking cylinder pin to keep it from popping out with mid-high range hunting loads.

i prefer the simpler mechanism of the Super BlackHawk for a hunting piece.    if working a beat as a cop i'd prefer a double-action.    the Super Black Hawk is less expensive and in its stainless steel versions they seem to be some of the best-machined pieces that Ruger makes.    the simpler mechanism strikes me as something that makes for even more reliability than the Super RedHawk is capable of.

i did put a Belt Mountain base pin on my SBH', with a regular screw put in place of the allen-headed version it came with.   it's a reliable way to upgrade a single-action if the base pin is loosening under recoil.

For black bear the sbh is a fine choice. If I were going for Griz, I MIGHT be persuaded to go with the SRH. Double action  shooting for ME, means up close and life or death situations.. I've never had any real accuracy problems with my sbh. I did get an after market cylinder pin though.

Tweedle-dum vs. tweedle dee. Both are excellent. When considering iron sighted guns, the SBH is my favorite Ruger. I haven't been without at least one for 30 years, and don't ever plan to be.
However, since you are selecting between scoped ( or at least scope-ready) guns, I would select the SRH. The location of the rings on it moves the eyepiece a bit closer to the eye than it would be on a SBH Hunter, thereby slightly increasing the field of view, and for some, slightly improving the speed of scope acquisition. It also improves the balance somewhat for me. The SRH doesn't have the single-spring potential trigger problems that a Redhawk has, and it is easy to get a good trigger on one. Accuracy of both of mine (7.5 and 9.5) is excellent, and they're bull-strong.
Well, yeah, they're kinda ugly in the eyes of some, but they can be dressed up. Beauty is as beauty does....

I prefer the SRH due to the  fact that the recoil is more straight back and up, rather than the twisting recoil of the SBH. I have severe tendinitis in my right elbow, and the twist hurts after a few rounds now. Before I could shoot 100 rounds without a problem, but one day the pain got to the point where 18 rounds was plenty. With the SRH, I can go back to 100 rounds a session again.
I can get off quite a few rounds per session with my SRH in .480 too!

if you go to a chiropractor who will do some "ultra-sound" on your elbow, and follow it up with Echinacea capsules (2 or 3 at a time) you will get relief from your symptoms........if it's as treatable as mine has been for a couple of problems contributing to it.

good luck,

Nothing helped my tendinitis like a little warm up followed by good ole' fashioned stretching, oh yeah, streeeeettttcccchhhhh,
that fixed that problem for GOOD. There are at least 3 different stretches for the elbow, google bicep and tricep stretches and get started, oh yeahhhhh  strrrrrrrreeeeeeeeettttttccccccchhhhhhhh.
Go slow, it might take a couple days to get total relief.

For me the SBH was an easy choice. Just go to the store and pick up one of each. I wanted something I could carry all day on my hip and the SRH was a heavy sucker. I use a 5.5" SBH for general woods trips. I have killed both deer and pigs with it. I carried it fishing and hinking in Alaska and it is the most accurate pistol I own.

I had received ample warning about that square-back SBH being hard on the knuckles from the good folks here at GB before I acquired one…They Were Right!. I quickly learned to keep the index finger of my left (wrap-around) hand pointing straight ahead parallel with the cylinder.

The SBH cared not as the point of that Square-back razor blade started chewing skin off of my left middle finger instead. My cure was to place the right hand middle finger where it normally goes for a right hand shooter and to place the left hand index finger almost on top of the right middle finger with that razor blade point being somewhat in between these two. Works Great without causing too much undue pressure on the gun or cramping of the hands. I think that the real cure is to put a Bisley gripframe on the piece.

The accuracy of this (new in 07-.44mag) has proved to be phenomenal…The first time I had it out it took me three shots to get it on paper with the next three grouping tightly within the confines of the black electrical tape that was holding up my target 30yds away. Been shooting this gun most of the summer now and it is pretty much like if you can see it, you can hit it.
Hope this helps a little bit, I cannot offer you anything on the SRH

Id chose the super blackhawk myself but with the round trigger guard. As to which one for bear protection a few of you know that i dont believe in that bs anyway. Aint one guy on this board that will probably face anything in there life more dangerous then a pig and they sure arent that scarey. As to speed of putting lead on target. Ive tried it many times and can consistantly put 6 shots ACCURATELY on taget faster with a single action 44 then I can with a DA in either DA mode or single action mode. By the time your recovered from recoil of the first shot the gun is cocked and ready for the second. Now if your talking light recoiling loads the DA might have a slight advantage in speed but it isnt my enough to make a difference.

I'm going to go with Lloyd on this one.  I prefer the Super Blackhawk, it fits me better, is easier to carry (for me) and is as accurate as I would need a 44 mag to be - I used it for metallic silhouette and hog huntin'.  If I had kept mine I would have had the barrel shortened and the trigger worked on but otherwise it was fine the way it was.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

I own both, except the Red Hawk is in .454. I like both, but would recommend you get the Black Hawk if you will be using iron sights and the Red Hawk if you`ll be using a scope.

I plan on scoping it. Why the differance?

If scoping, then the Super Redhawk. It comes with rings and is scope ready. It will be heavy either way, might as well make the scope mounting process as easy as possible.

The Super Black hawk hunter come with the scope mount set up just like the SRH.

The Redhawk that has the barrel mounts machined in is the same as the SuperBlackhawk Hunter,  but the SuperRedHawk has the mounts machined further back with one over the receiver and one in front .....The rings for the SuperRedHawk are not the same as on the BlackHawk hunter.

Super red hawk has a better trigger pull and shorter hammer drop.  Is a little quicker to fire if the need is there

Super red hawk has a better trigger pull

I thought the SBH's had the better pull?  And they can be adjusted more easily, IMO.  Of the two, my SBH has the far superior trigger, and I've put lower-weight Wolf springs in both.

I've hunted with a 9" srh in 44 mag for years and even though I sent it in to magnaport for some work I have been very happy with it. I have fired my friends sbh and liked it but I like the heavier gun to help with the recoil, and I don't get my finger pounded on by the trigger guard.

This is a personal decision, I like the heavier srh and I'm sure some don't like it for the same reason. Also the grip of a double action seems to fit my hand better, again a personal preference. Another wierd thing for me is I never shoot my srh double action, at least not in a hunting situation.

If you have a gun range that rents guns near you you can rent one of each and try them side by side to see which one fits you better.

I was in a dilemma myself & I chose the SRH 44 mag. Reason 1 is the double action for the possible fast follow up shot. Reason 2 & most important, the grip angle & the frame is enclosed in the grip. It just feels good to me. I have shot 3 SRH's 2 with 7 1/2" barrels & 1 with a 9 1/2" barrel & I bought one with a 7 1/2". I love it & don't regret it one bit. When cocked, the trigger pull feels pretty good to me. I never shot a SBH, but I held a couple in the store & they don't feel good to me.
