What should I do?
« on: August 05, 2007, 07:18:18 AM »
I send my model 94 off to this gunsmith with 30 years of experience  under is belt. I CALLED and talk to them ask them if they could handle the job no problem. All I wanted was a new front sight a new rear sight put on the rifle. Six week later I get a call ask me how I wanted to pay for it. So I give them credit card number I get the rifle it's all mess up. The rear sight wasn't replace all the way they put a new sight elevator on it. They put a new sight blade on it. But the metal arm was bent and rusted when I SEND it to them. They took a hammer straighten it out took black flat paint when over the rust. I wanted a whole new rear sight assembly the metal arm is all rust under the bottom. The front sight they put on is all scratch up like they hit with a screwdriver. When I send the rifle off I PUT a letter with it telling them what I wanted done. This place is two drive from me I PAID 65 DOLLAR for the work on my rifle still looks the same. What should I do? I CALLED LEFT A MESSAGE.

You can't even get a good dinner for $65.00 any more, take it some place you can talk directly to the person doing the work and see the results before you pay for it.  Just count the $65.00 as the cost of learning and move on.  Larry

I called williams gunsight about doing my rifle but they wouldn't send me a copy of there ffl lic to give to ups. Getting people to do work for you is hard these days.

I believe the law says you do not need any paper to send your rifle to a gunsmith for work on it.  You may want to look it up, that is probably why they didn't send you one.  Larry

I'm not aware of any carrier that asks to see a copy of the FFL to ship the gun for you. It's totally inappropriate on their part and when FFL holders ship to other FFL holders you can bet they show nothing. You can legally ship it to a gunsmith or manufacturer for repairs or modifications without going thru an FFL holder and do not need a copy of the FFL of the person you're sending it to but should attempt to verify they are in fact an FFL holder on line.

Since you charged the work to your credit card contact your credit card company and ask to fine a dispute of the charge since the work you paid for was not done. Almost always when you dispute charges you will be refunded the money they charged on your card. Then next time deal with a more reputable outfit.

Dispute the charge with your credit card company. Don't pay the gunsmith. I would never send any gun to him ever again.

I agree, dispute the charge but I would speak to the company that did the work and see what they are willing to do to make it right. It may just have been a misunderstanding. They should be contacted and I would want to hear their reply. You may check local pawn shops and gunshops to see who they use when a repair to a firearm is needed. The simplest method of sending a rifle is USPS. They won't handle pistols but rifles are OK. Rules are simple and don't in any way signify what's in the package.

I talk with the credit card company there sending out the paper work they want a second opinion in writing about the work that was done.  I talk to the guys at the local gun shop about it they said they didn't want to bad mouth another gunsmith.  I have done business with these guys for 20 years now I need a favor no way.  They said he did bad work won't be shopping there no more.

You got screwed by a gun hack!
Good gunsmiths are hard to find.
I wanted my Gander mtn. gunsmith to install a peep site on my 92. (drill and tap two holes)
He told me it would be 6-8 weeks before it would be done at the price of $48.00!!!!
So I ordered the tap and die from Brownells along with the drill bits for less than 48.00 and got them and had the job done in less than a week from placeing the order.
Did the job myself and still have the tap and dies along with the drill bits!
I don't consider myself a gunsmith though,
Just your everyday parts replacer ;)
Did you ever think of just ordering the sights you want and installing them yourself?
It would be the easiest and fastest way.

BTW- If it was me ,I would post this guys name and tell EVERYONE my dealings with him!

I talked to the gunsmith they wanted me to ship the rifle back to take care of the problem.  They didn't gave me a straight answer for why they would ship someone rifle to them like this.  They kept on dancing around I told them they could credit my vise card back.  It cost me 11 dollars to ship my gun to this place. They turner around and charge me 25 dollars for shipping for my gun in my same box I sent them.

Cut your losses. Don't waist any more time with a bad smith. Even if it cost me more $$, I would simply get the gun to a new smith to correct the problems.
