 IMHO: I was very pleased that " Cutting Egde Bullets " decided to manufacter the new " 45/70 Bullets " .

I'm currently forced to abide by the : * California Lead Free * Hunting Regulations ;
* which restricts the use of any " Lead Bullet " *

" CEB ",  were also willing to make any necessary modifications, for a wider range of use !

Regarding the Hi-BC tips:
I think it is a wonderful idea. That nose  contour blends beautifully with the 13-degree BBW nose profile on the NonCon HP. The longer and higher BC of the tip, the better.One-shot loading  directly into the chamber, bypass the magazine box, no problem. Keep the box  full of the short ones for life insurance. Load the long ones as needed for the long range shots. That can never be dangerous game at long  distance! The longer seating shank on the Hi-BC tip makes it more  secure. Doesn't seem to worsen the expansion on impact. Leave it long!

400 grain speers are a bit soft, my son shot a 100 lb hog with one and it blew a baseball sized hole through the rear ham. I must sat without this performance it would have been a long tracking job but it ruined a ton of meat and there were fragments akll through the path.

You're pushing them too fast.

Just sharing some updated information on the " CEB Bullets with Plastic Tips ".

Please note: Unfortunately .. I reside in California ( Lead Free Hunting).. Hence my preference for the new, " Copper or Brass Bullet " selections, which I've researched & will personally use in the future!

The " Heavier Bullets ", along with Bullet profile, will normally tend to favor a highier " B.C. " in most cases.
I.E.:

370 BBW#13 NonCon with a plastic tips insert: Preliminary testing estimate (458 B&M) ;
B.C.  * .634 *

420 BBW#13 NonCon with a plastic tip insert: Preliminary testing estimate (458 B&M) ;
B.C.  * .657 *

Just an " UPDATE " : R&D New Plastic Tips Inserts to improve " B.C. "

PAPI

I do that with hot glue on my 300gr JHP slugs that I bore out to 255-265grs.   I fill the cavity with hot glue, them top it off with a blob, then I use a metal scooper I found over the blob to make a spitzer tip.  I then trim off the excess glue once it cools.

I noticed a decent range increase for my groundhog pills.   When I use the flying ashtrays I have a substantial holdover when taking shots at chucks, but with the tipped slugs there is several less degrees of holdover.

 ;) you can buy a lee mold and cast your own a lot cheaper than buying lead bullets and paying shipping.45-70's aren't cheap to shoot if your buying them.

Ratdog,
I tried casting for my Muzzleloaders (.50 /.58), but it didn't really jazz me & I lost interest..  :-\

Now, I do practice with lots of lead bullets...(might change soon @ my two Club Ranges ??) !

However, I'm not able to " Hunt with Lead Bullets " , due to the current " Laws of the Land "  * Lead Free Zones * (might be a future Reg in other States... ?)

CA Mammal Hunting Regulation:
" §355. Ammunition Authorized for Taking Big Game and Nongame Birds and Nongame Mammals in Condor Range. In addition to those conditions provided for in sections 353 and 475, only centerfire rifle, centerfire pistol, muzzleloading, shotgun slug, and rimfire ammunition using projectiles certified pursuant to this section as containing no lead (as defined by subsection 353(h)) shall be used for the taking of big game and nongame birds and nongame mammals in condor range (see subsection 353(h))... "

So, I'm sort of stuck buying a few " Premium Bullets " & Reloading for all of my Hunting Rifles , which I'll eventually use everywhere else   ;)

p.s: The (lead free).458 Bullets, will also be used in my " .50 cal Muzzleloader ", with a Sabot !
