I am to Fussy
« on: August 05, 2007, 11:21:16 PM »
It finally hit me. While working on loads for my Handi  22 Hornet and testing factory ammo for my savage 22 magnum , That I am just to fussy. I have spent so much time working on loads for my hornet to get 100 yd MOA. And have gone thru many factory loads in my 22 mag and I get about 2 " moa at 100yds at best. Then I started thinking ( which I dont do often )  If my hornet shoots moa at 100 its 2" at 200 yds The max effective range . My 22 mags effective range is about 125yds, Well within the sweet spot of anything I will shoot at here in Pa.  Today I set up some oranges ( Fruit ) at 100 and tagged them everytime with my 22 mag.I think I need to spend less time on paper targets and more time shooting varmints. anyone else like me?

i use a 3 inch rule on groundhogs, and a 6 inch rule on deer, the maximum range i can keep all shots in that circle with a dead center hold is my limit. i find bullet drop usually dictates maximum range more than a rifle's ability to shoot moa.

Practice makes perfect... ;)

It never hurts to practice and have load development...but...once your satisfied...it is time to start scouting & hunting...

well, i have to say im like you only worse. at least you have found the limits of your expectations. i find that i am not happy until my loads will shoot ragged holes at 100 yds minimum. i think it is some rare form of OCD. i know the perfect ZERO group does not exist, but it is the journey that is important, not the destination.

I don't think there are alot of people that can shoot one hole groups themselves, yet have the gun or the perfect ammo to do it. But it's alot of fun trying, right? I'm down to about a 1 1/4" group at 100 yds. & I think I can get it better. I'll keep trying.

I like hearing poeple talk about using there .5" deer rifle to shoot a doe at 47 yards.
A 2moa rifle will hit a deer at 400 yards.
I look for ammo that shoots tight groups but if the bullet I want comes in under 2" I shoot it.

I use a shooting system that has worked for me all these years, minute of man/deer/elk/rabbit  you get the message.A man shooting a raging cape buffalo/charging seven banded ground squirrel has the same problem.ie; putting  the bullet you have in the kill zone.Every time no excuses(except for misses)LOL  if the rounds go where you are aiming   nuff said ,nuff done ,except for the journey .Doug

lone gunman...i think you bring up a very good point...i know i have been a bit caught up in shooting group's as of late...i do think time @ the range is important...that being said i'm going to spend more time shooting milk-jug's ect...before i start hunting coyote's next month...it's fun to see how well a guy can get his rifle to shoot...i used to hunt coyote's with a 2'' gun before i knew any different...it's all good !!

i don't mean to insult you but please don't give the long range hunting sport a bad name . if a rifle shoots 2 MOA its going to have a 8 inch group at 400 yards at best because that just taking into account rifle error then let say you have wind add 3 inches , buck fever add 2 inches (that if your the god shooting) also add in the fact that your not shooting off a bench with bags a off hand shot , a rest  or even a bipod will not shoot as good as a bench and bags , add 2.  your group now is at 15 inches , yeah i know a deer is pretty damn big but if you want to be fair to the deer you don't just aim for the deer you aim for a lung or the heart or in my case the neck just to be fair the the deer and when shooting a 15 inch group that not possible even if we took out all the human error you would still have a 8 inch group it still makes it damn near impossible . please if your gun can only shoot 2 MOA keep it under 200 if your going to be trying 400+ shots fine tune your rifle and learn how to shoot in a field environment. don't write checks your a$$ can't back up , or your have a lot of wounded deer running around.
