Walk the walk!!!
« on: August 06, 2007, 07:13:27 PM »
Okay you golf ball mortar guys, you have talked the talk long enough, can you walk the walk.  You have been burning up powder, pranging golf balls of in low earth orbit making nothing but smoke and noise.  Now lets see if you can shoot!!

Two years ago when we had the Golf Ball mortar contest one of the elements of the contest was the Mortar match.  Here's what the rules for the contest said.

"You must fire your mortar in a scaled down mortar match just like at the N-SSA matches at Ft. Shenandoah. Since the mortars will have roughly 30% scale of the 24PDR Coehorn the range will be 30 yards instead of 100. You must shoot golf balls.  Target will be 1 inch round dowel stuck in ground at 30 yards. Fire 7 rounds.  To score, measure the total aggregate distance for the best 5 shots from the dowel in feet and inches.  Shortest total aggregate wins match."

There's the rules, now get out and see how well you can do...and watch out for the curves!! You are about hit a big one, the learning curve.

You have until September 10th to post your results, we'll see if you can walk the walk!!! Or, are you just a talker!

FIRE!!!!!!!

Sounds GOOD.  How about Sept 10th (that gives a few more hours on the last weekend to shoot and report on Monday).

You're on!  We'll have to pick a day with little wind.  It'll be good putting 4 or 5 of these shoulder to shoulder to see how they compare.  Might be tough sorting things out after 400-500 shots though.   ::)

The Golfball Mortar newbies are in.  Hope we can get her done in two days and practice and shoot for score in one.  In honor of our British friends, we will LOOSELY base our G/B mortar on the wonderful "Mallet's" Mortar which presently resides at Fort Nelson in Portsmouth, England.  Don't expect too much here, the time limits are set in stone.

 Spuddy,

Your best bet would be to email Dom. He would be more than happy to let you know the price and shipping costs. At that time he can let you know his production schedule too. If, you purchase one of Dom's Dictators you will be more than happy with his work!
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

Ah er ah, Tim best 5 out 7 shots, not out of 400-500...

What are the rules regarding practice rounds?

I suggest you do a lot  of practicing before firing your 7 round match, measuring the best 5.  Theorectically  the two furthest are you sighters.

My website is a bit outdated.   I am working on the new site  and I'm hoping to have it completed soon.   The current price for a golf ball dictator is 300 dollars plus shipping.  If you have any questions I can be reached at:  dwc414@hotmail.com   Thanks, Dom

Well, I was planning on getting back to working on all the crap around the house I was supposed to be doing, but apparently that is not possible. I have a Dominick GB mortar barrel laying in my shed on top of 200 Golf Balls.

I blame DD for this   ::)

So I stopped by the hardware store tonight (The one that only hires hot 18-21 year olds) and picked up some wood. The carriage will be .75 inch thick oak laminated to .75 inch maple.... cross pieces will be white oak left over from the caronnade.  It won't be excessively pretty, just functional and heavy for it's size.  It will be a sled based design. I looked for some long 1/4-20 bolts while I was at the store... none... guess I gotta thread some more 1/4 inch stainless.... that is cake at this point....

I blame DD for this   ::)

O ya, I said that already   ;)

Dictator, i'm thinking Dom must feel like a proud parent, with all his little "DOM A NATORS" running around all over.............................CAT WHISPERER, there are 3 areas in the horse pasture with flat level planes. the grass is anywhere from 1/2" to 5" tall, them horses can't never eat it level, well, till winter time anyway! i want things to be just right when you come over, so i will mow the target area to suit you. how do you like your grass.................

My experience with grass is limited to mowing or baling it; try not to eat it nor to smoke it.

Horses and cows are OK up to the point of the range going hot.  I have no problem with either road-apples or meadow muffins in the firing area.  Might even qualify for extra difficulty points in the over-all agragate.

So, if we have but ONE post to shoot at, marking the golf balls as to which mortar and the sequence is easy.

Do we get points or penalty for hitting the opponent's golf ball out further from the stake?

If we start this early enough in the morning (that's when the real battles started) we could turn this into a biathlon starting with a round of cow-tipping first.  ;D  :o

Or we could set up our irons 30 yards apart and, with ONE golf-ball, volley back and forth - catching the ball with a baseball glove!

Hmmm.

That sounds like one of those things prefaced with the statement, "don't try this at home" or "it seemed like a good idea at the time."

Impacting "meadow muffins"... especially the fresh ones, will stop the ball pronto and prevent it from rolling a good hit into a bad one. However, don't be afraid to ask your opponent "Is that my ball or yours?" and innocently wait for him to dig it out to answer your question. If it is yours, pull a zip lock bag out of your back pocket and hold it out so that he can drop it in there for you  ;)

TIM, how tall do you want the dag gone grass! no cows to worry about, the horses are used to loud things and will just go up the mountain where they can look "down" on us................... since you'll be here MISTER CAT WHISPERER, after the mortar session, recon you could have a word or two with the 15 pound bob-tailed black cat... i think he is fine, i call him Blackie. BUT, for some strange reason, everyone else calls him "THAT BLACK DEVIL"....................
