Rainy day range report
« on: August 07, 2007, 07:33:43 AM »
Bought  my 6 y/o twin girls a BB gun today. Im stuck home for 3 wks with the girls . Wifes outta town .We were supposed to go boating today. Woke up to rain, so I figured I was gunna spend 50 bucks on gas  for the truck & boat. So I went to walmart & bought thier first gun. Got home & talked about gun safety( as much as a 6 y/o understands) Then I took a black marker & a green marker, & drew what the sights on the gun look like & how to line them up. Off to the range (the barn, still raining) set up a big cardboard box with  foam inside. Taped up some targets . I set up a table with my rest.We shot from 20 ft. Maggie took right to it 6 inch group ,all around the 10 ring. She was pretty happy.  Melissa  didnt do quite as well. Always hit the box ,I dont think she understands the whole lining up sights yet. She still had fun though.  Gunna shoot for 10 min or so each day. It beats playing with the barbie dolls

Good times.  I have an airgun range set up in my barn as well.    My kids always had a good time practicing there.    Now its my #1 grandson who shoots with me.

Enjoy it while you can.   They grow fast.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

That's excellent!  Way to go!  If they take a shine to it, you'll be in the market for a youth model Sportster .22LR before long. :D

Part 2   Went back out.  Melissa got a couple into the ten ring . Maggie,s group tighten up a little. So took them out in the yard set up 3 beer cans. 20 ft  both girls 3 for 3 . Now This is the funny part. Before we went out I was napping on the couch & the girls were playing dress up with their Disney princess stuff. They woke me up wanting to shoot. So all this fancy shooting was done wearing princess gowns & high heels. LOL

I wasnt  wearing gown or high heels

That was my first question.....    :o

Your wife will be proud of you, Mr Mom!! ;D ;D ;D

Tim

And that was my second.....    What's Mom gonna think of all this?   I know my wife would be cool with it, but how 'bout yours?

I think it's a great idea and can't wait until my daughter is old enough.    I have a Red Rider, a Remmy Genesis pellet rifle, and plenty of .22's that my little girl will inherit for her shooting needs.    She's already got a 20 ga. Pardner that she loves to get out of the cabinet and just hold!

She's 2.5 years old!!

I talked to the wife last night. She wasnt real happy about it. She,ll get over it . The girls did great. We shot about 150 rounds yesterday  . I had to come up with more targets (empty beer cans) after they went to bed. Gonna keep them on the iron sights for now. I moved the targets out another 5 ft. They re hitting them  3 out of 5 times.

I think this is great!

Keep their interest up with fun targets. The empty cans work good, also balloons. As they progress they can try breakables like crackers. The whole idea is to keep it fun.

Clay birds work good too.  I made some 1" wide rings from 4" PVC and then made a cut through the ring then screwed 5 or 6 rings to a board.  Then spread the ring open and placed a clay bird in it.  A quick and easy target holder.  My kids were using the SKS and .22 semi.  After they were done I had to make some more rings, but it is easy, quick and cheap.  My daughter did get a little upset when we shoot at a couple of her stuffed bears.  But all was okay when she hit them and the stuffing would blow out the back.  She was about 17 at the time.  With a Beretta 9mm she can out shoot a couple of her brothers.
