1965 Rem. 700 BDL 7MM mag.
« on: August 09, 2007, 05:26:32 AM »
picked up a basket case 700 in 7mm mag this past winter, bluing all wore off, stock finish worn through, scratched, and dents in the stock.paid 200$ for it. thought it was a decent deal.ran the serial # and found it was made in 1965.stripped the stock, sanded, and rubbed linseed oil into it.(over and over!!!) couldn't get cold blue to take to the barrel,(stainless steel) so i heated the barrel and action lightly with a propane torch (after stripping and steel wooling the heck out of it!!) then i sprayed it with rustoleum heat black barbecue paint. rubeed it down with a rough shop rag and repeated the process about 5 or 6 times. gun turned out very presentable. looks like a deep blue job(which i couldn't afford) and the stock has a nice subdued hand-rubbed look to it. really brought out the walnut grain!! gun shoots great!! put a tasco world class 3x9 mil-dot scope on it, matte black finish on the scope. whole set-up looks pretty nice. just wondering what i could expect to get out of it if i decide to sell the whole package? any thoughts would really be appreciated. thanks,Sert01

Sounds like a good re-modeling project.  Any before and after pictures?

I wouldn't even know where to begin with a selling price, but I'm with Siskiyou, get some pics posted!  ;)

I bought a 1971 model BDL in 7MM Rem mag planning to rebarrel it to 375 H&H, darned thing turned out to be one of my most accurate rifles after some tuning. It's stock had some scratches so I worked everything smooth with fine sandpaper and sprayed satin polyurethane on it a couple of times. They used to put some nice wood on those rifles for sure. The hot barrel and enamel paint trick is one I'll have to try on ugly, my 7x57.

Many modifications to guns lower their resale values, but since you started at $200, I doubt the work you did will affect your value that much.  Still, with most any mod, you can expect lower than book value.  I agree with others, a picture would help.

We are not talking about an 1876 Winchester here. Any hunting rifle tuned up a bit is worth more than it's well beaten earlier guise. How does it shoot?

Rickt300 and others, thanks for the feedback. i really wish i had taken pics of it before i started on it. it was a real mess. it had a red field scope on it that was really beat to h--- also. makes me sick to see a firearm abused this way! i have a Tasco 3-9 Milldot worldclass on it now and am shooting right around an inch at 100 yards. i am loading a hornady 162 gr bthp with 57.8 grains of imr4831 right now. will play a bit with the grains to improve accuracy. hope to get it under an inch by the time i'm done. anyone have a pet load in 7mm mag. they would like to share?? thanks again from w. 160 grain Speer Hotcor on top of 64.0 grains of RL22 popped with a CCI250 primer. Mild and very accurate in my rifle. The 7MM Remington magnum is one of those cartridges you really ought to work up loads for. My rifle also shoots well with the same powder charge under the 175 grain Hornady spire point. Gettin warmish here though. A real sleeper is the Federal Blue box factory ammo using 150 grain bullets, I got groups of less than 2 inches at 200 yards on a windy day!
