Scope help needed
« on: August 11, 2007, 04:51:37 AM »
Hey yall. I have a H&R Sportster .22WMR that I am interested in scoping. However, I have little experience with scopes, with the exception of using one or 2 scoped rifles that were already sighted in. I have no clue how exactly to work with a scope, as far as sighting it in is concerned. I understand that one adjustment knob is used to windage and the other for elevation, but know little about about scopes, there power, etc. If someone could run me through the basics and recommend a good scope I would appreciate it.

Here's a couple of good links for you.Setting up a scope isn't that hard to do.AS far as a good quality scope look at the Mueller 4.5-14x40 APV.Great scope with clear glass and holds a good zero. Not bad in $115.00 shipped cope.Just don't put on a heavy thumper gun.Slow

Slows advice is good,, I too have an APV on my Savage 93 and it's a great scope for the $. It may look a bit oversized on the Sportster in my opinion.  I have the Nikon 2-7 on my 17hmr sportster and find it to be good for close shots and out to 100 plus yards.  I've got a couple Weavers also fixed and variable that are nice scopes for the price. I guess I just like the smaller sized optics on that small of a rifle,,once again just my opinion.

I have tried many scopes on my sportsters but have now gone to 2-7x32mm on all of them I would stick with the 2-7 or even a fixed at 4 power that is plenty IMHO with any of the rim fires. Kurt

I have two preferences in RIMFIRE scopes.

1) Rim-fire specific, lo power good quality scope. EX. Leupold XVII rim-fire in 4X or 2X7

2) Large, hi-power ADJUSTABLE OBJECTIVE scope in Target or Tactical guise. Not necessarily top quality, just a name brand.

I have both on different rim-fire rifles. the one thing that's of utmost importance to me is parallax. Rim-fires are generally shot at much closer ranges than the center-fire rifles. Most reg scopes have parallax set at 100+ yards, more than the normal rim-fire is shot at. Rim-fire specific scopes have parallax set at 50 - 75 yards. and Adj Obj scopes allow the shooter to set parallax where they want/need. Parallax can and does make a huge difference in how well your rifle shoots.

I have used most from Tascos, Simmons to Leupold's and Nikon's. In an AO scope, for a rim-fire, buy what you like. In a rim-fire and center fire scope, buy the best you can afford. As a general rule of thumb, i suggest the latter in all occasions. But I have seen the quality of new Tascos and Simmons at least equal to my 1960 era Leupold's.

Good Luck,

CW

A great deal of your decision should be on your intended use of your rifle . Are you going to use it for hunting or for target use ? As Peanut said, a 4X or a 2-7 X should be enough for hunting.
The scope Slow has pictured is probably great on the range and can turn in some tight groups.

I use my rifles for hunting..and that 6-24X44 Tasco would be quite a scope to carry (watch out for) through thick undergrowth even though it may be "just the ticket" on the range...!

The Tasco 3-9X32 works fine for hunting with my .17 HMR pictured.

I have the 22WMR Sportster model and I mounted the Bushnell Banner 3-9X 50mm on it http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=4103  I bot the scope at the Optic zone and I am very happy with it. I did get the one with the illuminated reticle as I hunt fox (at night) with this gun. I don't know if I would mount this scope on a "hard kicker" or not. I suppose it would take the recoil, but for the 22 magnum, it's a great scope at a great price.

oh yeah as for whether or not to mount it on a big thumper i have a mueller 4.5 x16x50 on a 300 win mag with almost 100 rounds shot through it and no adjustment i think it passes the thump test  it shoots 1 inch 3 shot groups at 150 yards

Georgian,
A good scope for your 22 mag Sportster for not a lot of money is the Bushnell 3-9X32mm rimfire scope.
I have on my Marlin 983S 22 mag. They only run about $40, but they work great for a hunting/field scope.
Check out the reviews.

i run a 3-9-40 tasco on my 22 mag bolt action rifle and hold zero and clean if i drop my gun in the woods and ruin my scope i am out only 30 dollers not 120 or 150 . if your looking to not put much money in your scope the tasco and bushnell scopes at wolly world  work good for the money, i know there is a lott of people disagree with this but i have had not trouble out of these scope, i have had trouble with a BSA sweet 17  that was on my 17hmr
