Vent hole cleaning kit
« on: August 11, 2007, 10:51:15 AM »
For some reason, I decided that maybe I should throw together a more "formal" vent hole cleaning kit. My two big guns have .200 vents... I believe that is a common diameter for 1/8 inch fuse or paper straw based "quills".

A .22 rod and brush is a little tight. I stumbled across something that I did not know existed. Apparently there are people shooting things that are .20-ish caliber. I dunno what, but there are apparently .20-ish caliber pistols as well.

Anyway, Dewey makes a 7 " long ".20 caliber" bore brush. The actual  diameter measures about .158, so it should work fine on .186 diameter holes as well. The threads are 5x40 (I never heard of that untill last week either).

I also found a Dewey .20 caliber cleaning mop, a Tipton Bronze .20 caliber bore brush, and an "Iosso Eliminator" .20 caliber nylon brush.

I got them all from Midway.

They work a heck of a lot better than pipe cleaners and worn out .22 brushes. I especially like the mop for soaking the vent with water and Ballistol.

The .177 cal BB gun  Hoppes  cleaning kit for rifles will yield you 3 sections  you can make  3 vent brushes out of , you get  one replaceable brass brush with, but can buy others .

RIckk ,They have to make something smaller to clean those new .17 cal rifles. And I'm not talking about those air powered guns.

Yup... they do... I was looking for one of those 17 caliber rods in fact.

I emailed Dewey Co. to get the diameters of their .22 and .17 rods, telling them what I really needed it for and they turned me on to this .20 caliber stuff.

"Rick,
Actually the .20 caliber equipment would be best for a .200 diameter hole.
The .22 rods are around .210 in diameter while the .20 caliber rods are
around .190. Please let us know if we can help any further.
Regards,
Dewey's
"

The rod I ordered actually measures .158... smaller than what they mentioned. However, he may have been referring to the threaded part of their brushes, rather than the rod diameter.
