38-55 G2 Carbine question
« on: August 11, 2007, 02:17:16 PM »

Since I have a smallbore (223) and medium bore (30-30) barrel fro my G2 carbine now, I was thinking of a 375 Win or 38-55 barrel, so I'd have a large bore also.  Since the G2 is chambered from the factory for the 375 Winchester (and therefore can handle the pressure generated), would it be possible to fire 375 Win ammo in a 38-55 G2 barrel?  The main differences being the length of the chamber (the 38-55 being longer), and the thickness of brass (the 375 being thicker), it would seem that it would not pose a problem.

If it is safe, I would prefer the 38-55 barrel, and occasionally fire 375's through it, for a bit more ammo versatility.

Anybody have an opinion, or experience with this topic?

Thanks,

Mike

I'd stick with the .375 chamber.  I have not seen one of T/C's .38-55s, but the typical .38-55 chamber is oversized for the .377"-.378" bullets normally used.  Slop in the neck area does no good for accuracy.  I have to assume it is a true .375" bore - most true .38-5s were not, having bores up to .380".  You won't find much .38-55 loaded ammo, and if you handload it is just as easy to load .375 as it is .38-55...easier in fact.

That's why I like GBO... I always learn something new.  Didn' t know of the chamber diameter difference.  Thanks for the reply.

I would chooise the 375 JDJ in a 23" G2 factory barrel.

If you handload you can do everything the 375 Winchester or the 38-55 (Ballard) Winchester could do but better.

...except shoot tiny groups with schutzen-type cast bullet loads.     It isn't always  about having the most horsepower guys.....   ;)

TC typically does not use many different diameter barrels when the same will do. I'd bet they start out with the same barrel blank for all their .38-55, .375 Winchester and .375 JDJ barrels and put same twist rate in all. I do not KNOW that but knowing TC that's most likely the way they do it. I cannot speak to how the chambers might be cut on them but I'm reasonably sure all would have the same barrel dimensions.
