Leaving for Canada Monday for black bear hunting.
« on: August 11, 2007, 03:10:46 PM »
Well my count down is less than 36 hours before I leave for Canada for black bear hunting. Doing some last minute stuff and packing.
I decided to take my 45-70 Guide gun, I took it out for a final zero last weekend and had a 1 inch group at 100 yards with my 405 gr. hard cast bullets. It is a medium hot load but what counts is the accuracy, my back up gun is my Browning A-bolt .338 Win Mag. I was going to take another 45-70 as my back up gun, but I have not shot anything as of yet with my .338 WM.  It is going to be a long drive, but I am looking forward to the hunt.  ;D

Have you taken bear in Canada before?

Good hunting and hope the bugs are down in population where you hunt.

I hope to be leaving myself on a bait run tomorrow.

Bearfat,

You can start baiting already?

Just the prep work, hauled up the syrup and a few extra goodies to store until Friday when it's legal to bait. I did some tree stand work too, trimming and cutting.

I did leave him a slurry jug halfway out to the tree stand a couple weeks ago and he found it. Jammed packed with marshmallow and donut frosting.

All he left of it. They lick them clean.

I hung a few more out today on the way to tree stand. He'll be in the area when I make the big drop Friday.
Minnesota law says you can't hunt within 100 yards of an area that has been baited for bear before baiting is legal. I'm well away from that. We've been hunting them so long up there we know all their stupid trails anyway. And this year it's so dry up there their trails are like elephants.

Yeah, that's a good idea, but I never get around to drawing them in before the baiting opener.  The last couple of days I've been jumping out of my skin with excitement.  You'd think I'd be discouraged after three years in a row without a bear.  If I have the opportunity I'm going to blast the first 150+ pounder that I see.
