new savage mark II won't eject
« on: August 11, 2007, 08:05:38 PM »
I bought a plain vanilla 22 LR Savage Mark II (non Accutrigger) and it won't eject.  At first I thought that it was from being new.  Then I thought, well maybe it is dirty.....I cleaned and oiled it and after firing 100 odd rounds it still won't eject.  It extracts the empty from the chamber and then either stovepipes or the brass just slides around in the bolt area.  This is a consistent problem, zero ejections with hard, fast bolt opening, or slow, easy bolt opening.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Accuracy is great, by the way, but it is useless for the woods right now.

Well, maybe too embarrassing more than anything else.

Yeah, someone at RFC gave some ideas to look for....but they would still be beyond my gunsmithing ability.  I am leaning toward shipping it to Savage.  I don't have the time or inclination to work on a brand new rifle.  No offense to the Savage-philes, but I don't think that it was a bargain over the Marlin 925 like I thought that it was going to be.

Okay, I am "not so smart".

I put the Weaver TO-10 adapter on the rifle. The brass was hitting the adapter and falling back into the breach. I used everyone's best friend, the 4-1/2" angle grinder and a file to cut a notch and to fix the problem.

Thanks for the help. I was crying to someone at work about having to resight the scope if I sent it off to Savage. That made me think of taking the base off and I had the "ah, ha" moment.

Now, it flings the brass 3-4 feet easily. It might be a combination of removing some stock from the adapter and a guy from RFC, stlshooter's, screwdriver technique in all honesty.

Thanks again to all.

I  bought one new and it wouldn't eject spent or live rounds with about 5 different brands of .22 ammo. I had to use a screwdriver to pry them out. When using Winchester Experts the last round wouldn't feed from the clip because it didn't lock in right. Also had 3 misfires. Sent it back 2x. Came back rusty and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it even though I told them what ammo to use. I finally got a refund from Walmart and they sold it to another unsuspecting shooter. This took about two months. Savage wouldn't give a refund. I would have a hard time buying anything from Savage again.

I got a CZ 452 American and used the same ammo without those problems.
