338 Federal
« on: August 12, 2007, 09:00:40 AM »
I just got a 338 Federal Pro Hunter barrel for my Pro Hunter TC Encore. Was almost dark when I shot it, not sighted in yet. Was just checking it for recoil.  Very surprised, recoil was mild, about like a 270. Using 185 Grain Federal Barnes Triple Shock round. Very pleased, will be my deer rifle this fall, along with my 15" 6.8 Rem Encore pistol.

I've been toying with the idea of the 338 Federal.  I was wondering about the recoil, if it's like a .270 then it's milder than I thought it'd be.  Keep us posted with range reports.

Recoil SHOULD be almost identical to a .30-'06.  180 grain bullets at the same velocity as the '06.  200 grain bullets at the same velocity as the '06.  210 gr at about same.  Shouldn't be much difference at all.  Not having shot one yet, but just on the numbers, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference in recoil given the same gun in the two chamberings.  Personally, given a 180 grain bullet, I'd have to take the '06 for the higher sectional density and better penetration.  On the other hand, I have two '06's and REALLY want a .338 Federal.  Not sure on whitetail/hogs the SD will play that much of a part in it.  Haven't had one not penetrate all the way through yet on broadside shots (180 FailSafe's).
