to catch a weasel
« on: August 12, 2007, 05:04:13 PM »
Hi all.  I haven't set a trap for the last couple years, but its time to get back into it! I just bought some property in central Wisconsin that's all wooded. When I've trapped in the past it was always south central Wis. mixed farm/woods so I may have alot of questions- hope you guys don't mind.  First priority this year may sound silly, but I absolutely MUST help my 8 year old daughter, Nikita catch a weasel. I have caught fox, coyote, 'coon and muskrat, but don't know how and more importantly WHERE to get her an ermine. Can you pleases help us with our quest? Thank you!
Mike

Mike, questions are part of the reason we are here.
Give this post a little bit,and you will get your weasel answers. That is one animal I have never trapped---there just isn't to many of them out in 4 feet of water.Though I know there are some in a few of the areas I trap.

I've never trapped a weasel either, at least not on purpose, but I have read articles where they use a box with a rat trap in it. Most of the pictures I've seen the box is enclosed with a hole in one end that is small enough only a weasel can get through it.

The thread on jump traps someone was using them for weasels so you should get some help.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Hi!
I caught 3 weasels last year. I just started trapping, too.
make a box about  6 x 6 x 12". Use old weathered boards if possible.
Cut a hole in 1 end about 2" diameter and place it about 2" from the bottom of the box, so that the weasel will "drop in" the box on the trap. Bait the far end of the box with fresh meat.
I use a #0 or #1 long spring. Use a fence staple to secure the chain.
Make sure your box has a cover (just a board) you can lift off to check your trap.
Put a rock on top so the cover doesn't blow off from the wind or easily get moved by an animal.
Good luck!

////////////i've caught them in hollow logs in the woods not really targeting them. A 1 1/2 ls will work as a body gripper they are so small.

Put them along creeks and field edge brush lines and along old buildings.
Good places for them to hunt mice.
In the snow it's easy to find their tracks.

Fence rows(especially old rock ones--if you can find them) and swamp edges ,are also good spots for weasel.

I favor culverts with tall grass or Cattails for cover on both ends.  Look for area's a Weasel can hunt without being seen by hawks or owls.  frozen creeks with tall grass provide good set locations !
