I'm thinking of getting one of these for Indiana hunting and if I did I may try to use it on a black bear hunt.  Would you feel undergunned Black Bear hunting with a Marlin 1894 44Mag?  Guys have been hunting black bears with 44's for a long time out of handguns, but I'm curious about what experienced bear hunters think of it.  It's a baited hunt, but what if it's a 100 yard shot though?

Range is the issue. If you are willing to live with an absolute maximum range of 100 yards, then go for it. Otherwise buy a BLR.

anything a 44 can do in a revolver it can do in spades from a rifle ! why would you be 100 yds from the bait ? just kidding !
when i shot the 44 mag in competition we had to knock a 50 lb. ram off a stand at 200 meters , the 44 did it well ! if you know how to aim out to 150 or so yards you should be ok !  a 30/30 would work also !
there is no way to know how many bears were killed with a 44-40 , so with more power the mag. should be just fine !
BLR ? rack and pinion should be on a car not a gun !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

No.  In fact, I have been thinking about trading in my 30-30 for a 44M Marlin rifle specifically for black bear and javelina hunting.

Absolutely not.... The 44 mag in a revolver or lever is a great black bear killer within its effective range. Its an excellent choice with the correct bullet.

Only one of the many B bears I have killed was within 100 yards,we shoot across the canyon on most of our bear hunts.Even under 100 I want a round that is going to break both front shoulders,I wouldnt take anything that wont shoot a 150 gr bonded bullet at 3000 fps or better.I have never lost a bear and I dont want to,there is no such thing as overkill when hunting a critter as tough as a bear.

,I wouldnt take anything that wont shoot a 150 gr bonded bullet at 3000 fps or better.

That eliminates every big bore hand gun and most every big bore long on the planet. It certainly takes the historical proof of big bore guns as great big game killers and throws it completly out the window.

I would take a .429 caliber 300 gr bullet at 1800fps over a 150 grain (assuming .30) at 3000 fps any day on a bear. Distance of course a consideration here. But the question is 100yards. Give me the .429 any day......in this case.

Distance IS my consideration,if you limit yourself to 100 yards on my ranch you may never get a shot, therefore I use an adequate caliber.

I just setup my marlin .44 mag for bear aimpoint sight and 300gr slugs, calling from ground or tree stand.
