What are the different types of slugs and the application for which they were designed?

Doug,
I'm not exactly sure what kind of answer you're looking for here could you please clarify. Are you asking about the evolution of slugs, from the original 'pumpkin ball' to the modern day sabot slug, or are you asking for all the present modern day slugs and what they were intended for?

Wink,
I as asking about the modern slugs available today and their application.

The Brenneke slug was developed by Wilhelm Brenneke in 1898. The Brenneke slug is solid allowing for deep penetration and was designed for large and dangerous game at close ranges, and deer sized game out to 100 yards.

As I recall the shotgun Sabot Slug was developed by the French military/police following WW2.
Actual development stated during the war. They noticed that they had a problem in barricade/ambush situations where the 9mm just couldn't stop or even penetrate an vehicle body. And a standard slug wasn't accurate  enough and didn't have enough velocity to really do a job on an engine block.

With hunters/shooters being what we are.... "Hey, whatcha know? An accurate slug round!"
The rest, as they say, is history.

Nice article Wink Man.  It gives a good overview on the "state of the slug world" for sure.  I got my GUNS magazine the other day and it had an article about the relative "safety" of slugs vs. rifles after some measuring and testing.  Kind of a myth buster, but hard to say if thinking will be changed.  I continue to be amazed at the range and accuracy we can get with slugs and slug guns nowadays.
