New to Handi's
« on: August 15, 2007, 11:07:27 AM »
I'm working on a trade for an SB2 recvr.  I was wanting to put a long heavy 308 or 30-06 on it which would eventually become a 30 Newton.  Looks like they only make 22" heavies in 30 cal.  Another post stated that a guy in OR will rebore to a larger cal.  How about a smaller chamber size??  How do I get a 300 Whisper Handi???
I'm an Encore/Contender guy.  Where are the custom barrel makers for the Handi??

Where are the custom barrel makers for the Handi??

That's what we have been wandering for years.
You can re chamber available barrels (not bad but can only go longer chambers),
Re bore 223 or similar,or barrel stub (both cost more than a handi rifle or encore barrel).

PS no magnums the under lug and frame can't take it.

All right, I'll save the 30 Newton project for the Encore.    I sure would like a 260 or 6.5-06 in a Handi though.

As shallow as the rifling is in an H&R bore, you may be able to have a 26" 25-06 barrel rebored to .264" for a 6.5-06, that would depend on the bore specs of the particular barrel. Otherwise, do as I'm doing and have a custom barrel made from a donor underlug and barrel blank. ;) You could also have a 24" .223 barrel rechambered and bored to .264" for either the .260 or 6.5-06. But the Encore already being available in both would probably be the route to go if you already have the frame.

Will a 12 ga under lug work for a donor??  Are there different lugs for different pressures??

I think all the underlugs are the same for modern production barrels, differences will be ejectors vs extractors for rifles for late production. Shotguns barrels have been used as donors for stubbing projects. ;)

The trade is gonna go thru.  I'll soon have a Handi SB2 rcvr.  I'd like a 26" bull in 308 or 30-06, looks like I'll have to go custom.  I think the local 'smith has a stub he'll give me.
